Pregnancy and Running

Does anyone know if it is ok to run (jog) while pregnant? I just started in Jan with a particular 5K in mind for a goal. I am barely pregnant now and will be about 11 weeks by then. Just seems like a lot of jostling around for the little one but for stubborn pride I want to get to my goal! I obviously would not want to take ANY chances over stubborn pride though. :)

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

I looked this up for you and I think you should really take a look at it first before you do anything. I worked out my whole pregnancy, but I worked out even before. I know there are guidelines you really need to follow with any exercise while pregnant, especially your heart rate. Please take some time with this site, it will help with questions you have and it will be from professionals. Your baby is most important and worth the reading. Congratulations on your pregnancy and the best of luck. Please email me and let me know what you think, and if you have any other questions. Best of luck with your pregnancy and run. S.

Run Run Run!!!! Keep going as long as you already were. It's great for you and fine for the baby. I ran the 25k River run 5 months pregnant and the only thing hurting at the was my legs (tired) because I hadn't trained as many miles as I should have but oh well! Maybe it's stubborn pride. There are people who run throught he whole pregnancy-so 11 weeks is nothing.

Run like the wind S.. Kick some butt!

It depends is this your first? Or hsve you had issues before? Because for instance take me. I am 8 weeks along and have known of me being pregnant since 3 weeks along and the dr has me on total restrictions of nothing over 5 to 10 pounds relaxing not doing much I can walk a long doistance but not jog. But I have had 8 pregnancy with 4 alive and this is my 9th pregnancy. So you have to look at your history and talk with your dr. if this is your first and you have been an active normal runner pryer too I would just say something to your dr and see what they say. I would think it would be ok for you to continue. But check with them and follow your gut too if you feel exhausted don't push your self the first three months is very tiring. Congradulations!!!

My sister ran through her entire pregnancy with no problems - she even ran 6 miles on the day she ended up going into labor! As the other posters said, it's just important to talk with your doctor, listen to your body, stay well hydrated, and don't get overheated. I know another issue is that as your pregnancy progresses, the hormone relaxin makes your ligaments looser, so you have to be careful about twisting your ankle or hurting your joints if you're running on uneven ground. But I know a lot of runners who have run through their pregnancies with no problems. My sister's OB actually told her that she's going to start recommending that all her pregnant patients try to stay that active throughout their pregnancy, after seeing how quickly my sister recovered from a long, hard delivery. Good luck at the race!

YOu need to get clearance from your doc. I wouldn't worry about the shaking at this point, but the strain on your body and your heart rate etc. Only your doc can answer this one.

1. ask your dr.

2. listen to your body..

I rode my bike when I was pregnant.. when I rode i did have contractions. The last time I rode my bike I was about 20 weeks pregnant... I was having contractions and had to stop and rest... (I was out of breath).

My body was telling me to stop..

as pregnancy goes on.. it will get harder runa nd then harder to walk. It is not unusual to be out of breath taking a stroll around the block..

I have been running/jogging for the past 8 years and ran during both my pregnancies. My understanding is that it's okay to continue exercise you began before pregnancy, but it's very important to listen to what your body tells you. While pregnant with my first, I tried to continue running, but I found myself short of breath and had to take my workouts down a notch. I took prenatal yoga and used the elliptical machine at an easy pace. With my second pregnancy, I ran until my 7th month, when my belly got too big and uncomfortable (even with support garments!). WIth both my kids, I was back running around 4-6 weeks with the doc's blessing and the advice to listen to my body and STOP if needed. I think running not only helped me feel less nauseated, made me feel better about my weight gain (although I still gained about 35 pounds with each pregnancy), and speeded my recovery post-natally.
HOWEVER, it's important to talk to your doc and make sure you get the all-clear to do this, of course. Good luck with your 5K!

i took a kick boxing class while i was pregnant, and in fact my instructor was preggos too. she was a runner and said after awhile it was too hard to run, but if you are in good shape and have been running for awhile i believe you can continue for a little while longer. i did the kick boxing into my 6th month, and ab work outs just about into my 4th month.

Do the run! Have a great time! And the whole while be thinking about how, already, you are setting a great example of health and fitness for your little one. I believe docs say it's okay up until about 7 months. You have plenty of time!

I was told by my midwife that any exercise I did before pregnancy was ok during pregnancy, but that I would probably need to slow down as I got bigger. If you are thinking of starting jogging or running since becoming pregnant it is probably best to talk it over with your OB/DR. I think it would probably be fine to do some jogging though.
I exercised all the way through both my pregnancies but did have to slow down a little a the end. If you can exercise during pregnancy it will help with the labor and recovery.

The first trimester is a high risk time for miscarriage, and overdoing it with exercise is one way to up your risk. Please consult your doctor before doing this, that's a lot of running, especially as this isn't something you've done for years and years.

Check with your doctor, but they always say to continue excersising while pregnant. I think a 5K would be fine as long as you keep yourself hydrated and not focus on winning but enjoy the run.

I have always been told that you can continue doing any exercise that you were doing before you were pregnant. I was training for a 5K when I got pregnant and I finished the race when I was 6 weeks pregnant. I continued to work out throughout my pregnancy. I would ask your OB to be certain though.

If you were a jogger before you got pregnant it shouldn't be a problem. I've walked all thru my pregnancies, but I have a friend that has 5 kids and she was a jogger and jogged thru her pregnancies. I would confirm with your dr office, but it's probably o.k.

I have 2 friends that are runners and were before their pregnancy. One friend had her baby and everything was fine. She continued to run and exercise as she normally did. The other friend just found out she is having a girl and in the same week completed a half marathon with an excellent time! I tried to continue running when I was pregnant but spotted a little so I stopped. I think it depends on what level of fitness you were at before you started and always rely on your doctor's advice!

Check with your Dr. Your heart rate needs to stay under a certain rate.
