Hello, I'm 37 weeks pregnant and I have recently learned that my unborn baby has a much large uper body then what is expected. For some reason the doctor did not go into much detail to explain the situation to me, but instead asked me to come back as soon as possible for a diabeties testing. Now, I have already taken that testing much earlier in the pregnancy and passed. I was hopeing someone might know, or have experinced something like this with there own pregnancy's. Also unborn baby shawn is weighing in around 7 lbs 12 oz since fridays appointment. Not sure if this is something I should worry about, or just wait it out until mondays appointment. Well just a little update on Shawn, he still isnt here, but as far as I know my test results came back normal. So thats one less thing for me to concern myself with. I am now enjoying the pregnancy again, swollen feet and all. :-) The newest experince has been the first braxton hicks contractions. Scarred the mess out of me at first, but soon after the phone call to the on-call doctors we learned not to worry and with some walking everything will be fine. So smooth sailing from here. I am a proud mama of 3. My last one was delivered c-section b/c of the same concern. I had justational diabetes w/ her. She was 9 lbs 1 oz at birth and she is doing wonderful!! Don't worry about anything! My second one was 2 weeks early and he was 8 pounds. They tested him for diabetes at birth and he is fine. Being a fist time mom is scary because you want the best!! I think that you are just having a big boy!! Don't worry! M.
Try not to worry. At 36 weeks an ultrasound estimated my baby at 7 lbs 10 oz. She was born at almost 41 weeks (c-section after a failed induction)at 9 lb 8 oz. Because she was big they tested her blood sugar right after she was born, and she was perfectly normal.

Diabetic babies are usually very large and it can happen at any point in the pregnancy. They will monitor you correctly, just make sure you ask lots of questions.Also if it gestational diabetes after giving birth they will have to monitor the baby's blood sugar. Try not to worry too much,if it is gestational diabetes the baby's blood sugar will be monitored after he's born. Good luck

My name is R., I live in Plant City and was a practicing midwife until my daughter's birth a year ago. You certainly want to do any Ultrasound follow up reccomended by your doctor to rule out any abnormalities. The diabetes screening is not accurate past 30 weeks of pregnancy and if your 28 week screen was normal it is very unlikely that you have gestational diabetes. IT sounds like your doctor may be laying some ground work to scare you about a possible "big" baby. Be reassured that your body knows the right size baby to grow for you as long as you are making healthy food choices with moderate portion sizes. : ) Your body knows how to grow a baby and give birth normally. To me it sounds like your dr was unnecessarily worrying you. I am not sure, but my opinion is that Shawn is just going to be a big baby. The way I understand it is that in the begining all babies grow at the same rate. Then towards the end of the preg babies that are going to be big begin grow faster. My son was born at 38 weeks, and was almost 8 lbs. The dr was not at all concerned at his weight. Her only concern was my birthing him if he was too big. They began to check to see if I was ready to be induced at 37 weeks, but I was only 1 cm. She was talking about inducing but said it prob would fail. Hope this is helpful. And if you are concerned call your dr. I never hesiatated to call if I had a question, that is what they are there for.

Baby Shawn is going to be fine. Ultrasound is only an estimation and everything about pregnancy is a guess. Doctors are vague because they don't really know. I have an 18-month-old boy and I was told he was big at 36 weeks. My baby had a very large head (and still does!) but I would have been able to delivery him vaginally but he was posterior so I had a c-section. Your baby could be born any day and be fine and healthy. I know people who have had 10 and 11 pound babies. Try to focus on spending your last few baby-free days going to the movies or doing something you enjoy. God Bless you!

I am not sure this will help but when I was 36 weeks pregnant I measured 42. My Dr sent me for a level 2 sonogram. The sonogram tech had the Dr (not my OB)come look and he said my son's lower body was short and he may be dwarf. All my other tests came back perfect. I was freaking out. When I got back to my Dr she said that Dr has bad bedside manner and your baby is fine. My son came out perfectly normal and he is now almost 4 years old. I wish you the best of luck. I really don't know but in my experience they are overly causious. I just had a baby on July 14th and I had a problem with low anmiotic fluid which turned out fine. Try not to worry and wait and see what the Dr's say. I would think they would have spotted something sooner if it was a serious problem. Good Luck and I pray everything with your baby is ok.
