Pregnancy Glucose Test?

Today I have had my 28 weeks appointment and I had blood drawn for the 1-hr glucose test and I got a message from my doctor asking me to call them back. Since their office is closed now, I'll call tomorrow. I also had the hemoglobin & hematocrit test done today, but I am guessing they called me in regards to the glucose test. My question is, supposing I failed the 1 hr glucose test, is there any chances that I could pass the 3 hrs one? I don't eat that much sugars or carbs, although I must admit that this morning, four hrs before the test, I had a slice of homemade white bread (no sugar in it), one hard boiled egg and 2 table spoons of low fat cottage cheese and without realising it, I ate one slice of apple while getting my son's lunch bag ready for preschool. So, I am thinking the white bread and the apple slice may have triggered the results, as I never, but never, had any issues with sugar in my blood. My blood sugar was always moderate, sometimes low, and had no problem during my first pregnancy. Any thoughts or advices are highly appreciated. Thanks.

So What Happened?

I talked to the nurse this morning and she said my hemoglobin was low, 10.3, and put me on iron pills twice a day. I had the same issue during my first pregnancy so in a way I kind of expected this. I am really happy it's not GD though and will keep an eye on my diet! Thansk everybody for your useful insights!

I failed the one hour because they told me I didn't have to fast -- the ladies at the lab laughed and shook their heads at that one. I was sure to fast for the 3-hour and passed just fine.

I have 6 kids... I really don't remember the oldest results as she is 18 & I was 17 yrs old when she was born. But I failed the 1 hr w/ my 8, 7, 5 and 2 yr olds... the baby 1 I passed it by 2 pts. That said, I passed all the 3 hr test I had to take. Just make sure when you go for the 3 hr test not to eat anything after mid-night & try to go as early in the morning as you can... cause I know being prego always make you so much more hungry - just get it over with as early as you can.

Good luck & congratz!

My doctor always told me not to fast in any way before the test but not to eat something very sugary like candy or soda. So, I doubt the bread and apple did you in. It's possible it was just a fluke. I wouldn't worry too much. Just eat a normal diet before your test unless otherwise advised by your doctor.

Each pregnancy is different though and it's also possible that you might have blood sugar issues this time. It's kind of a pain but if you do, but nothing you can't handle.

All of what you ate probably caused the test failure. Bread is a carb (even without sugar) and carbs turn to sugar in your blood stream. Apples of course have their own natural sugar in them. But most of what we eat becomes a sugar of some sort in our blood stream.

Anyway ... if you be sure to fast (that means NOTHING besides water, and plenty of it) for the 3 hour chances are pretty good you'll pass it with flying colors.

There is a 50% false positive rate with the 1 hour test. Ignore it until,ou have further information. I actually stopped taking that test after my first pregnancy. Lots of research shows that gestational diabetes may be a made up problem.

I had gestational diabetes in both my pregnancies, but diabetes runs rampant in my family. It didn't matter what I ate, my OB attempted to have me control my blood sugar with diet & exercise alone. Eventually, by 32 weeks, I had to use insulin. I was told sometimes my body just can't make enough insulin for two, not that I was eating the wrong foods. I'm lucky that after I delivered my sugar levels have been normal and am no longer on insulin. good luck to you, hopefully (if that is the purpose of your doctor's call) you can learn how to manage with diet & exercise alone. All the best
