Hi Mom's,
I am absolutely petrified and besides myself and after getting home from a doc appt today, I needed to write just to see if I could more assurances from y'all.
I had what I thought was my 8 week check today. That is, 8 weeks from the first day of my last period (April 26th); and during such they did a vaginal sonogram and the sac could not be found/nor a heartbeat. The nurse said I had a thick endometrial lining (I think is what she referred to it as) that might have prevented her from seeing anything futher. She suspected perhaps, after the fact that she might have seens a small sac; but was not sure completely. So, the doc ordered blood test to be drawn to test my progrestorne, and HCG levels? Has anyone has this happen to them before. Could I on the verge of an etopic pregnancy and not know it (I am having no pain?); could I be so early from the actual date of conception therefore nothing can be seen? or could I be facing a miscarriage? This is so scarry and I am just looking for possible words of advice you may have if any of you have been faced with a similar situation, please write me back!!! Please!!!
K.

I wouldn't be concerned. I remember when I went in for 12 weeks and they were looking for the heartbeat... the doctor told me it might still be too early. So my guess is that it's probably not uncommon to not be able to find one at 8 weeks. Just wait until the blood test comes back, and the doctor will be able to give you more information. Everything is probably just fine!

The same happened to me w/my oldest son. I was in HORRIBLE PAIN when I went to the ER and they ran a preg test and it came back positive but they could not find the fetus, There was a sac but no fetus so they admitted me to monitor me. I was FREAKING out Pretty Bad.

The next morning they did another sonogram and they saw the sac and fetus right where it was suppose to be and I delivered a perfectly healthy baby boy 7 lbs 14 oz and 19 1/2 inches.

Several years ago my girlfriend had the same thing happen, only she was in terrible pain. Her Dr. told her she was carrying an "empty sac". He prescribded her pain killers for her pain, we were drinking alchohol and smoking ciggies...since she was told she was not really pregnant. She was in so much pain, the DR. finally decided to do a DNC (since there was no actual fetus). Well, the day before her scheduled DNC she went in for pre-op and THEY FOUND A HEARTBEAT!!! Thank God, the baby was fine and born healthy...even after all the meds and such.

I don't know what the cause was for the misdiagnoses...be it that she was actually earlier in her pregnancy than she thougth or what. I hope the same is true for you...that you have a healthy baby on the way!

God Bless!

K.,
I'm sorry to hear you are dealing with this. It could be that your dates are wrong and you are not as far along as what you think. I hope this is the case. I have had 2 miscarriages so I have been down this road before. By 6 weeks they should def be able to see a sac and a beating heart. Hopefully everything is okay.

Well, I really don't want to alarm you. My doctor also thought that I might be having an ectopic pregnancy, b/c she couldn't see anything either with a vaginal sonogram at what we thought was our 8 week visit. I did the blood work like you did and came back in a week and we discovered that I was only six weeks pregnant, (according to measurements) but at that sixth week visit we were able to hear a heartbeat. On the picture we were able to see the yolk sac and the baby. Maybe like me, you are just earlier than you thought you were? Good Luck with everything...

We had to go to a fertility doctor to get pregnant with our first son. They had a very strict policy of NO sonograms for the heartbeat before 7 weeks for just this reason. I started spotting with my son at 6 weeks, but I had to wait until 7 weeks to get a sono (longest week of my life!!)

I honestly can't tell you if this is the case with you, but not seeing the h/b at 6 weeks must happen enough for them to have a policy like that!!

I'll keep you in my prayers!!

Well, I don't want to alarm you. But I had the same and I miscarried... The doctor can tell you more after the bloodwork comes back.

I wish with all my heart you and the baby will be fine.

Love, I.

Hi K.,
I know how scary the first trimester can be!
I've had 2 miscarriages and they were usually within a week of finding out I was pregnant.
I went to the Dr. and there was no sign of a fetus or heartbeat and a few days later I would miscarry.
The first one was very painful and the second was not at all so even when I started bleeding, I thought everything was still fine. I read constantly online how many pregnancies have bleeding and some women mistake it for a period if they do not know they are pregnant so I really had my mind set that this could not be happening to me again!

I even went to the Dr. the very first day I started bleeding and my HCG levels had still been going up.
Well by the next day I was still bleeding and we went into the ER where I found out I miscarried so it was a bunch of ups and downs and one of the most confusing times of my life.
I am not saying at all you are likely to miscarry but if you are 8 for sure weeks along they should have been able to see something.
If you are only 6 weeks then there's a definite chance you are still too early to see a baby yet.

I wish you the best and hope I didn't worry you too much but I wanted you to know how my experiences were when I was in your situation.
I hope you can get some more posotive responses so you don't worry yourself too much.
I wish you the best and let us know how everything goes.
GOOD LUCK!

The EXACT same thing happened to me with my daughter!!! It was absolutely devastating since I had just been through 2 miscarriages...the dr told me to wait 2 weeks and come back for a repeat vag ultrasound...we came back and there she was!!!! Out of the 4 pregnancies I successfully carried...she was the healthiest one of all!!! Keep your chin up and please keep us posted....

hugs

Hi K.,

I know it's hard but think positive...this is a hard time, I know I've been through this twice and I know exactly how stressful it can be. I've been pregnant 3x and none of them have been smooth. The first time it happened to me was in 2005. I went in for a visit after testing positive on a pg test and we did the vag sono to find out there was a sac with no fetus. We did blood work multiple times and two other vag sono's the following weeks. Finally I had to have a DNC.
The second time it happened to me was a few weeks ago. I went in for a 7 week check up and there was a sac but couldn't find a heartbeat. Bloodwork came back great. I ended up having my dates off and 2 weeks later there was the heartbeat...now I'm 9 weeks pg.
I did manage to have a beautiful son last year despite all the complications.
Hang in there! Leslie

Its possible that it was just too early to see anything. The 8 week mark is a bit early in my opinion for an US. Hopefully your blood tests will provide positive results. I will be thinking of you. Good luck.
