Pregnant While on Mirena?

I have been on Mirena since 5 weeks after the birth of my daughter. About 3 1/2 months. I noticed last week some wierd things my body is doing. I thought to myself..."If I didn't know any better, I'd think I was pregnant again!". And then it dawned on me...what if I am? My breasts feel like they are trying to produce milk again, not leaking or anything though. And I'm nautious most of the time, actually concentrating on not vomiting. Mood, swings, stomache cramps, hot flashes and dizzy spells are also on the list. Has anyone else experienced this while they had an IUD? I started my period again about 3 weeks ago, and have been spotting ever since. I had my IUD checked and my doctor said everything was how it should be, except all the spotting. She thinks it should go away soon enough. No pregnancy test was given at the checkup.

What can I do next?

It'd be impossible for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterine wall with the IUD in. No pregnancy, just side effects of the BC method.

Yes,I had all of those symptoms you described (I also had mine put in when my son was 6 weeks old). I loved it at first. But then I started having problems... It was so unnerving, because I too thought I was pregnant all the time- sore breasts, hot flashes, strange abdominal pains, mood swings, etc. My paranoia got worse after the Mirena stopped my period altogether. I don't know how many pregnancy tests I took! Here is the deal- The hormones in the Mirena will just throw your body out of whack, even though the doctors say that the levels of hormone are too low and localized to cause any problems. After a few months, the IUD started causing me to have major problems with ovarian cysts. Between the cysts and the hormones, I was a mess. Oh, and I spotted for 6 mos- well past the time frame that the doc said I would. I actually had it removed about 8 mos ago after 2 years of use, and all my symptoms stopped about two weeks after removal. Point being- the doctor always told me that the symptoms I was having would go away over time- they NEVER did. I now wish I had of never gotten it. If you google out problems with the Mirena, you will see that tons of other women have had the same issues. Good luck.

The thing about it is, your body reacting to the horomones in the IUD can produce the exact same symptoms as pregnancy. Some women are really sensitive to artificial horomones in any type of BC. You are not the first person that I have heard say that everything was great when they first got the Mirena, but after several months, they started to have strange reactions and symptoms from the IUD. Symptoms like what you are describing.

Honestly, I don't that you are pregnant, I think your body is having issues processing the horomones. But, maybe a home pregnancy test could relieve your fears. Even with an IUD in place, a home pregnancy test would still be accurate as long as you are far enough part conception. Also, if you start to have any pain, I'd let your doctor know. I think that ectopic pregnancies are more common when you have an IUD in place. But, if you are not pregnant and your symptoms do not resolve, it might be a good idea to look into using another form of BC.

You may want to insist on a pregnancy test. My doctor's thought the same thing about me. Long story short, I had undergone prepping to get my tubes tied before a nurse "who had a feeling" decided to test my urine sample.-Pregnant my other baby was only 4 weeks old.

Hi C.
I have had the Mirena since Dec. 2007. I got it a few months following the birth of my son. I have had all of the symptoms you have described. At one point my doctor placed me on low dose estrogen to try and get me "regulated" It helped. But I (every so many months) go through having some usually at minimum two of the symptoms. I have thought about getting it pulled and going back to pills. But I keep talking myself out of it. Good luck with it. I have felt like it has gotten better, but it is there at times.

I would go out and buy a pg test. However if the DR has checked it they would likely have noticed if you were pg. I had an IUD for 5 years and had no end of trouble with it. My periods were horrible and I bled all the time! I finally had it out and am much better now.

I wouldn't recommend them to anyone!

Yes!!! The exact same thing happened to me. It was miserable. It will also make you gain weight. I had it in for 2 weeks and gained 5 pounds. All the symptoms you have, i had too. i told my gyn that I wanted it out immediately. Within 48 hours after removal, i was back to normal and then quickly started losing the iud weight and then the baby weight. Gyn said that this does happen to a select few individuals.

I also have an IUD and I spotted for a while after I got it. After a few months it went away and I have not had a period in almost 2 yrs! It is wonderful! If you can make it through the beginning then you will absolutely love it! I have also heard that it takes some people's bodies a while to adjust or that some people just can't adjust and they have problems on a continual basis. It varies with everyone just like BC pills. Hope this helps some. Good Luck!

Hi C.,
I have been on Mirena for alomost two years now. And from my experience I can only tell you that I have been going through the exact same things as you have described. I'd become nauseated, tender nipples, and even increase in appetite. At first, I would become scared thinking I was possibly pregnant, but then I realized that that was just my body in response to the IUD in making my body "think" that it was pregnant.Other times I do spot, have bloating, and the hormones to make me a little emotional at times. It gets a little bothersome at times, because you always have to be extra sure that you arent pregnant but I actually wouldnt trade it for any other contraception out there. I just wanted to give you a heads up of what to expect. Hope it helps.

Yes, same problems! Just got fed up and had it removed last week. And just like that my symptoms were relieved! The breast tenderness was the worst! They were so sensitive and seemed swollen (not a good thing for a 36 DD gal). I hoped it would go away...but it didn't. I also had heart palpitations which scared me. Haven't had any since removal! I swear there are some women that are not able to tolerate that hormone, no matter how low a dose it is! (I also had depression, 15 lbs weight gain, ovary pain, had to always have a liner on due to unexpected happenings, lol)

Ironically, my sister got one about the same time I did and loves hers. No weight gain, breast tenderness, all is well for her! She thinks I was nuts to get rid of it, lol.

GL to you!

It sounds like you might be having a negative reaction to some of the hormones. Perhaps it's time to seek out an alternative form of birth control. I use "natural family planning" which doesn't use any hormones, but is more sophisticated than the "calendar" or "rhythm" method. You can google the term for more information.
