Pregnant with an IUD???

I had my IUD put in Jan.2008 after my second son was born. I've always used my menstraul cycle to know when it is best to conceive...or not conceive in the case after my second pregnancy. Well after putting in my IUD, my menstraul cycles were very random and now almost nonexistant. My fear is being pregnant and not knowing that I am. I planned both my pregnancies and began prenatal vitamins months before even trying. With out having a menstral cycle...I'm kind of lost. Is it possible to get pregnant with an IUD?

What can I do next?

From what my doctor explained to me, an IUD is supposed to be more effective than the birth control pill. The possiblity of pregnancy is very rare.

Hi N., I do know that there is only one birth control that's 100% and that's abstinence LOL. I'm not sure about IUD because I never tried that form of birth control but I got pregnant while I was on the pill. So it's always safe to take the pregnancy test and I would also suggest asking your doctor about your cycle if you're not pregnant.

The only way I know how to say is this upfront. It is possible to get pregnant with an IUD, though probably rare. But, if you do get pregnant with one, they have to remove it. When they remove it, it can remove the fetus as well from what I understand and the pregnancy may be terminated. That is what I read in the fine print when I was considering an IUD. I would have a discussion with your doctor about this so you can be better informed and know what to look for in regards to how to tell if you get pregnant. I would assume it would be all the other signs, like breast tenderness, morning sickness, cramps, etc.

Have you spoken with your doctor? They should have explained to you that lack of periods with a Mirena is kind of a bonus. I'm assuming you have a Mirena, not the copper kind. They make periods worse. I've been doing ultrasound for 16 years and have never done an ultrasound on someone whose IUD was placed properly. If you are concerned, go see you doctor, talk to them about risks of pregnancy, and request an ultrasound for peace of mind. If placed properly, a pregnancy cannot implant.

N.,
Yes it is possible to get pregnant with and IUD. I had an IUD put in and when I went back to my check up the Dr. could not find it...so he put another one in me. About 2 years later I ended up pregnant again with the IUD in me and I ended up with a tubal pregnancy which they had to take the baby and I have had female problems every since.

It is possible, one of my friends had an IUD and she got pregnant. However, because of the IUD, she miscarried. I would be very careful, and talk to you doctor about the risks and possible alternatives. Hope it helps!

Sounds like you're using a Merina IUD, if I spelled that right. If so, pregnancy is VERY unlikely -- the Merina is even more effective than a tubal ligation. If I've got that IUD, one thing you can do is to check to make sure the IUD is in place -- there's a little wire, about the same as a bit of fishing line, that you should be able to feel with a finger to ensure that the IUD is in place.

I was a little weirded out when I first got mine too -- I've had a period all my life, and suddenly, no period! For me, because I was in my 40s my worry was that I would menopause without realizing it. It took me quite awhile to realize that according to nearly everyone I know who has gone through menopause, if I DO menopause without realizing it, that would be a GOOD thing! Worrying about a "stealth pregnancy" is obviously a different kind of worry, but I think it is a similar product of the spooky disappearance of the period. If it is too worriesome, there is another IUD that can actually stay in for 10 years, instead of just 5 as with the Merina, that is as or almost as effective, and where your period is actually heavier rather than lighter. Some women definitely find going without a period too spooky and prefer the other IUD for that reason.

All the best!
M.

After getting my IUD, I stopped having periods until I had it removed. Lack of menstration is a very common "side effect" of using an IUD for birth control. If you are still concerned, take a home test.

I would guess anything is possible. i have an IUD and my periods were non existant for the first 4 months then very heavy for 2 months then back to almost nothing. Check with your dr, but you should be fine. they say it takes 6-12 months for you to get "regular" on an IUD.

unfortunately, yes. it is possible to become pregnant while utilizing an IUD. first of all the IUD does not prevent pregnancy, it "make the uterus a hostile environment" so that a pregnancy does not sustain. therefore it is very possible to become pregnant. My proof is my one year old son. I had an IUD for two years the "copper one" and got it removed one week before my husbands vasectomy(we did NOTHING!!) about a week or so later I felt very ill, I went to the ER with my symptoms and they did an ultrasound, I was approximately 7weeeks pregnant with my son. so yes it is very possible..

is it the IUD you got or the IUC called Mirena? If its the second one then it will reduce your cycles down to practically non existent. I had the 10 year IUD but had other problems because of pre-existing condition. But don't worry too muuch about being prego cuz losing your monthly curse is normal with Mirena.

I am on Mirena, and since having it (got it in March 07) my periods are pretty much non-existent...still. Every couple of months I will have a light period for 4-5 days max. I would not worry to much about it, but if you do then taking a home pregnancy test is an option.

You can get pregnant with an IUD--though it is a small chance. Some have higher failure rates than others. Other than using back-up, I don't know that you can get to 100% certainty.

Take a good multivitamin and eat a balanced diet...that would cover you in the early weeks of pregnancy. If you are really worried take an at home pregnancy test every couple of months--the equate (walmart) brand is inexpensive and one of the most accurate.

The likliehood of having a pregnancy carry longer then a few weeks with an IUD is rare (the main function of the IUD is to prevent a possible future baby from implanting at 2 weeks post fertilization.) But it IS possible that the abortive function fails and you remain pregnant. My sister was on the pill and also didn't know she was pregnant. She lost the baby at 12 weeks.

I have a Mirena IUD and that has been the hardest part for me not having periods. About every three to six months I get convinced I might be pregnant. The doc checked me out and now I just buy some cheapo preganncy tests and when the wondering gets too much I take one. Remembering the tests are much less expensive than pads, or bc pills It has been three years now and I dont' worry about it too much. So get checked out for peace of mind and then realize you aren't the only one!
