Pregnant with IUD

I have had an IUD that I love for four years. It is the Mirena 5 year hormonal one. I am due to have it taken out May of next year. For the past three weeks I have been displaying signs that I've only had when I'm pregnant. My boobs have grown a cup size and hurt so bad I can barely hug my kids. I have gained weight which is normally very difficult for me. This morning I was throwing up until noon and now I am fine. My chest is really tight and I get tired very easily. I usually can not sleep more than 6 hours a night. Now I am sleeping 8-10 hours and I am still exhausted. Plus my sense of smell is so acute I can smell everything. I always have strange cravings so that isn't so weird. I took a pregnancy test two weeks ago when this first started but it was negative. My husband told me he knows four women who have gotten pregnant and had healthy babies while they had an IUD. So here are my questions... have any of you gotten pregnant with an IUD? Did the home pregnancy test show up negative? The other issue is that I was told if I get pregnant and do not have my IUD taken out immediately then the baby could have horrible problems. Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks,
P.

This happened to my mother in-law. I would say go to your doc asap. My now sister in-law has major facial birth defects becaus of this. I know it pretty uncommon but its better to be safe than sorry.

P.,

I would definitely contact your OB/GYN or Primary Physician to get a CBC done. To check to your hormone, thyroid gland and for anemia. IUD can cause serious complications if not taken out.

You betcha! His name is Matthew and he's 21 months old now. Pretty unexpected, but a blessing. We went the surgical route after that one!

And yes, everything was fine, thankfully. My home test was not negative, and yes, I had the IUD taken out the same day I had the positive test because I didn't want to take a chance that it could cause any problems even though they had not yet confirmed my pregnancy. My advice to you would be to immediately go to your OB and have a blood test. That way, if you're not pregnant, you can discuss your symptoms and figure out exactly what IS going on.

Good luck!

I second the advice to see your OB/GYN immediately. It could be that the IUD isn't in place anymore - I had mine in for five years and when I went to have it removed, it had migrated and I had to have it removed surgically. I didn't end up pregnant and thankfully had no complications from the procedure, but it could have happened easily! If you are pregnant, whether the IUD is in place or not, you need to be seen. If you're not pregnant and there's a possibility that the IUD isn't in place...you need to be seen.

Best of luck to you. I hope everything turns out well, and please feel free to message me if you want to talk further!

Go take another pregnancy test. My first test was negative, but the one several days later was positive. The home tests check for a hormone and it has to rise to a certain level to be detected to avoid false positives. Simply, the test favors false negatives.

However, if the symptoms continues even if the test is negative, you need to go to the OB-GYN. Ectopic pregnancies can take longer to register on pregnancy tests too.

I don't think getting pregnant on the IUD will be a problem for the baby. Likely it isn't properly placed anymore or this wouldn't have occured. If you are pregnant, I expect they will remove it.

Good luck.

I would request an immediate appt with your OB/GYN... if not them, go see your family doctor... but I would not wait. With those symptoms, I would hope that you are pregnant and these are not symptoms of a worse problem.... wow... if you got pregnant with an IUD... your kid must be destined for something really great... what is the actual chance of that happening??? Good luck getting those fast doctors appts and processing emotionally whatever might be happening.

I don't know about the IUD however, The last time I was pregnant I kept getting false negatives with my other children my tests showed up quickly but this time I had to make sure I did the test first thing in the morning. I kept taking tests(because in my gut I knew I was pregnant even though I hadn't been trying) for two weeks I took a test every 2 to 3 days. So I would suggest trying another test or even better yet get an appointment with your Doctor. Because if you are pregnant you may want the peice of mind that something else isn't going wrong.

Not sure but I woudl take another pregnancy test. I know when I took one it came up negative but the following week, 6 days later, it came up positive. So I would take another just to make sure. Second I wanted to respond because I wanted to ask how you like the IUD. I just had my 2nd child and got the shot, my doc gave me some info but I don't trust pamphlets. I would like to know more from someone that has had one. Any problems or if it was great for you. I am also going to post this but saw your question first.
I have heard of people getting pregnant on any type of birth control so just double check.
Thanks

Make an appointment with your GYN to get official pregnancy test. You sound pregnant. I had a friend who got pregnant twice with an IUD. If you're not pregnant, then something is obviously going on with your body. Either way, you need medical attention.
