Pregnant with Kidney Stones and a Stint :( Any Tips?

I have always suffered from those lovely little things known as kidney stones, but it seems they flare up during pregnancy. My first pregnancy that ended in miscarriage was miserable due to the UTI's and stone passing. With my son, I just passed them and went on.....however, this round is different! I am 17 wks, and around 12 weeks I was having severe pain, etc, due to an extremely large stone. Since Lithotripsy or surgery is not an option at that point, they had to put in a stint. It is the most uncomfortable thing I have ever experienced....the involuntary bladder contractions, the blood in my urine, passing strange clot-like things...AHHHH! And it seems the further my pregnancy gets the worse it is.....any suggestions on how to alleviate these side efects? Is this stuff even normal? I would love to hear other stint nightmare stories to know I am not alone!

What can I do next?

Wow sounds like you are having some intense experiences and I wish you the best. I don't know what kind of stones you are having, but Magnesium is a fabulous mineral for preventing calcium oxalate stones. Research has show this effect in a large percentage of people who form stones regularly. Magnesium increases calcium solubility especially in the urine and deficiencies are thought to be linked to this.

Talk to your health care provider about this since you are pregnant. I also have a great herbal formula that isn't showing contraindications for pregnancy if you are interested. good luck.

I had kidney stones with my first pregnancy and I had surgery twice. My kidneyw as going to shut down if I didn't. I don't know who your uroligist is but i would ask why you can't have surgery and they use the basket to get it out.

Hi, H.. I have had several kidney stones, though I have never had a stint, nor did I have problems during pregnancy. I did have to have lithotripsy last year. My stone was too large, and yours may be, as well, but I found "The Kidney Stone Removal Report" online. I never got to try it, but I plan to if I have another stone. The main remedy is drinking lots of Coke then eating pureed asparagus. Sounds weird, but at least it is "natural" (if Coke is natural!!). There are other rememdies described, as well. Don't know if this will help...I wish you the best. Kidney stones are definitely awful!!

Well...I have had kidney stones since I was 19 years old and in A. i will be 29. I understand the wainting part also,we tried for almost right at a year to conceive my son and he finally arrived june of 2005, so he is about 2& 1/2 yrs old. While I was pregnant I was in the hospital 8 days out of a 2 week time frame passing what the dr.'s call "gravel". THe shocking part is, that while I was in the hospital they actually gave me morphine. The dr. told me that the pain was harder on my son than the medicine. And I was worried about long-term affects on him from that, but he is a normal 100% boy. No development problems or anything. And before that, earlier in my pregnancy,I was in the E.R about 5 times passing blood and clots like you are talking about...which totally freaked me out, thinking I was having a mis-carriage. But it wasn't, the blood and clots were from my urine, due to the stones. They never actually put in a "stint", since I was only passing "gravel" and there were no LARGE stones, but I do know that they are VERY uncomfortable. My mother had one....she is the person that I get this lovely gene from!!! Anyway, I hope you aren't too terribly miserable(or hope you can feel as good as a pregnant woman with stones can be)and try to just stay as still and rested as you can. I do know that the less you move around the easier those are to deal with...and lay on your right side...that keeps the weight of the baby off of the bladder. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Well, as you can tell you aren't alone in this. When I was pregnant with my daughter (who is now 4) I had a kidney stone that was lodged. They went in and put in a stint. After they put in the stint, I did have some soreness and it did hurt to urinate. They gave me Loritab while I was at home to help with the pain, but I didn't take any unless it was absolutely intolerable. I didn't have many problems with the stint until delivery. I did have an epidural and since I had the stint this did nothing for me. She was pushing on the stint when I would try and push her down. So, even though I had an epidural I felt everything (her wiggling and moving). I just had to grin and bare it because they just told me there was nothing they could do. After I gave birth, they waited one month to blast the stone and to take it out. Removing the stone was easy, they put me to sleep and blasted it, with no problems at all, but the process causes some swelling so they inserted another stint. The removal process of the stint hurt so bad. That was the Worst part of it. They told me they used some numbing gel, but if it numbed it I couldn't tell.

H., I don't know if this will help or not, but I have Polycystic kidneys. That is where the kidneys are covered in numerous cysts. They can be painful but the main issue for me was, there is not none cure. On the recommendation of a friend I added Original Limu to my and my husband's diet. My cysts are no longer growing and I feel great. I now have hope that my kidneys will continue to function. Friends who were pregnant drank Original Limu during pregnancy with no problems. Original Limu changed my life and that of my family. Go to www.thesea.originallimu.com, it's a seaweed and organic juice drink. Try a case and see how you like it. If Original Limu helps you go back to the site, and Join, the way you would at Sams Club, or Costco. You will get a case a month. And pay wholesale.

Good Luck.

Hey, I know what it's like! My chronic stones flared up - plus lots of extra problems like inefficient water processing, leading to lots of headaches and constipation like you wouldn't BELIEVE, no matter how much fiber and water I consumed.

I went to see an acupuncturist and I kid you not, I was fine within a couple of sessions. I made sure ahead of time that it was absolutely safe for the baby, and she's a healthy little kicker, due in June!

Oh, and when I went to the urologist to check on things, they couldn't find anything in the ultrasound anymore. I'm even cleared for a home birth!!

Please email me if you need any other info.

I have had such a horrible experience with "the stint". Oh my gosh!!! It was horrible. Every time I would go to the bathroom at work my co-workers would here me yelling because it would hurt so bad when I urinate. That was the worst thing ever! I thought I would suffer with them the rest of my life, but I haven't had that problem again. I feel your pain and sympathize with you because I know it's worse when you're pregnant. I wonder why yours keep coming back. Do you watch your calcium intake? THat's one of the things I cut back on.
