I was just wondering what prenatal vitamins other women used. I have been using one that my MD prescribed when I first became pregnant, and have continued using the same one while breastfeeding. Does anyone use a non-prescription one that is good?

What can I do next?

Two Flintstone Completes and an Omega 3....that's what my doc suggested I take throughout my pregnancy (because I had a hard time swallowing the prenatals) and I still do it!

Hi! I took the Target prenatal vitamins. They are comparable to Stewart Prenatal vitamins, but much cheaper. They also did not upset my stomach, which I like!!!

I use OneSource Prenatal Vitamins (pink bottle). I get them at Walmart, but I think they have them everywhere. They say they have 50% more calcium than Stuart Prenatal vitamins. When I was trying to get pregnant with my son, I started on these, got pregnant, then asked my doctor if I should switch to Rx prenatals. She said if the ones I was on were not making me sick, I should stick with them. So, I did. They are like $9.00 for 275 pills. You take 2 pills a day. I just take 2 at the same time, so I don't forget one here and there.

I also take Expecta. It is a DHA suppliment for pregnant and nursing moms.

Hi S.,
I have had great results with the GNC prenatal vitamins. We currently have two healthy boys (6 and 4) and are expecting a little girl this October. With all three pregnacies I used the GNC prenatal vitamins with iron, GNC Folic Acid 400 mcg, and GNC DHA 250 (all recommended by my doctor). All three pregnancies have been great and our first two sons were born weighing 7 lbs. and 9 lbs. with no complications. I take the vitamins at night to help eliminate any upset stomach they may cause. By doing this I have had no problems and feel great! Hope this helps!

The over-the-counter ones I take are absorbed at a much higher rate than any prescription or store brand out there. The absorption rate is something like 90% - this is a stark contrast to the scripts and store brands that are at about 30%.

I used Isotonix brand vitamins which I LOVE! It is in a powder form that you simply mix w/ water and drink like juice. Great because you get complete benefit immediately and you can vary the amount you take so you get just what you need each day. Better than a tablet because there is no need to wait for your body to break it down and absorb it and the dosage is preset so you get what you get. I took this brand before, during and after pregnancy. I'll be honest. I tried the Rx brand from my OB but had such digestive issues that I soon switched to Isotonix once I knew there were no binders or coatings my body had to deal with. Plus, I took the digestive tablet test and soon found out that I was wasting my money as my body was not breaking down the vitamin anyway. To take this test for yourself, simply drop a tablet into some vinegar and let it soak for 45 mins. Once ther 45 mins is up, see how much of the tablet remains. Whatever is left is what your body will pass. So, for me, I loved the fact that I knew I was getting full benefit from the vitamin and I wasn't pooping my $ away. You can get Isotonix brand from any Market America distributor. They are really fantastic products.

I use the Target brand prenatals -- I've been on them pretty much for almost 5 years now! Preparing for pregnancy with my son, having my son, nursing, same with daughter, and now pregnant with #3. In comparing labels, they have the same exact vitamins/minerals in them. My doctor actually just told me to pick up some over the counter. They only cost $6-7 for 100!

Hi S..

I use a brand from Walmart called Nature Made. Prescription prenatals made me sick, so my doctor recommended that I use a non-prescription one. I've been using this one for years (pregnant, nursing, pregnant, nursing...) It's inexpensive and has all of the right vitamins. :) I also take Fish Oils to get all of the omega 3's that are needed for brain and eye development.

Hi S.,

I have been using USANA vitamins for 2 1/2 years now and I'll be honest, I feel healthier now than I did when I was 25! While the cost is no longer an issue...I get them for FREE, they typically cost about $1.33 per day...that's less than a cup of coffee a day! So, you may consider looking into it! Just visit www.dglosser.usana.com to learn more.

Hi S.,

I used 'Reliv' which is in the form of shakes. Pills are only absorbed between 15%-28% into our bodies while the other gets flushed into the sewer plant (and I've been told by ppl who worked there that they actually use dump trucks to haul out the 'centrum' pills that still have the print 'centrum' on them...scary!)
So Reliv is absorbed between 90-98% into the body and within 20-30 minutes. I actually feel a difference after taking them, and I didn't initially start taking for prenatals...but I was the only prego woman in my group that wasn't having to take naps and could still keep up with a 1 year old while pregnant w/ the 2nd ;0) I have yet for someone else to tell me that their prenatals are actually help them to feel good, aside from just trying to get the baby nutrients that they need. But w/ Reliv, I felt great and I knew that my baby was actually GETTING what they needed.

So I've been takign this stuff for 5 years, I rarely get sick, and I know it's the best stuff that I can get myself, give to my children (now 3 yrs old and 19 months old) and I've recently joined the company b/c I was sharing this awesome stuff w/ everyone I meet, so I figured that I might as well get paid to do so!
By the way, their website is: www.Reliv.com

Message me if you'd like more info.
Blessings to you and your family.

I actually continued on my prescription pre-natals and went cash pay on them. It is actually cheaper than using my insurance AND cheaper than buying over the counter brands. I get 90 days worth at a time. I love my pre-natals and didn't want to give them up! Just ask your doc to prescribe them. My OB/GYN lets me stay on them and I had a tubal. :) Call around to your local pharmacies and ask the 90 price on your RX brand. Go with whomever is cheapest. Or watch for specials by stores for $10 off a new RX. Then you get them for even less.

The over the counter ones are just as good. The only difference is that they don't contain as much folic acid. At least, that's what my dr. told me. I couldn't take the ones the dr prescribed cause they made me super sick. I took the OTC ones and everything was just fine. Ask your dr, but I'm sure there isn't any need for the prescription ones anymore.

I started out with a prescription prenatal vitamin, but it was quite costly even with insurance so I asked my doctor. She said that the over-the counter ones would be fine so I have used Walgreen's and CVS brand vitamins that have been just fine. However, she did tell me to add an extra folic acid and DHA supplement such as Expecta. It is kind of a pain to take three pills each night (for someeone who hates to swallow pills), but it has been well worth it for the little one growing inside of me. Good luck! :)

You can use any OTC pre-natal vitamin. I would suggest also adding folic acid and essential lipids [Omega-3, EHA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)]usually sold as Omega-3 or Fish oil . All of these are important for healthy brain development. I always take extra Vitamin D (400 IU is NOT enough, and you CAN'T overdose), this will obviously be good for Calcium absorption for you and baby.

I get a lot of my vitamins from HerbsWholesale.com. You can get all of these at any drug store as well.

http://www.herbs-wholesale.com/keywords/prenatal.html

The ones I got online you took 4 pills a day, which seems like a lot, but I had one with each meal and one at night and I never felt nauseated from them. I think when you take one with everything in it, thta's what makes people feel sick. There's also the added benefit of having better absorption and a constant level of witamins and minerals in your bloodstream and hence your milk.

I used Shaklee vitamins throughout my pregancy and while nursing my now 15 month old son. I have had wonderful results. I also took OmegaGuard during my pregnancy, lactation and now give it to my son for brain development. In fact, I fell in love with them and since I was looking for a way to quit my full time job to stay home with my son and still make money, I started working with Shaklee. Visit to projectmahma.com/gemsoffire

I have so much information on prenatals, as far as the breakdown of what prenatals contain. Here is a summary:

Shaklee's Vita-lea vs. Leading Pre-Natals from Dr.Chris Jensen

Vita-lea (their multi-vitamin) can and is used by thousands of consumers as a prenatal supplement. Often people are under the mistaken impression that pregnancy or lactation requires a completely different multivitamin and mineral supplement. Nutritional needs are increased during pregnancy and lactation, but the value of a balanced and comprehensive nutritional supplement like Vita-lea is that it complements an individual's food intake to help ensure that all nutrient needs are met. It's especially important to get sufficient amounts of the B vitamin folic acid even before you get pregnant, to help reduce the risk of your baby having a common type of birth defect. Folic acid is found in Vita-lea and B-Complex. Vita-lea provides 450mg of calcium, more than twice as much in pre-natals.

Shaklee Vita-lea contains all essentail 12 vitamins and 7 minerals in proper balance, 27 whole vegetable sources which are readily absorbed by the body, contains no toxic chemicals, no herbicides, no pesticides, no sugar, no artificial color, flavors or additives, 100% of RDA Biotin and so much more.

Zenate contains polyethylene glycol which may produce brain and kidnet damage, stearic acid which may cause intestinal obstruction, no biotin, no pantothenic acid.

Prenate 90 (Bock) contains no biotin, no magnesium, very low calcium

Precare Caplets contains no Vitamin A, no Vitamin B1, no Vitamin B12, No biotin, Due to improper balanceof B vitamins this causes a dumping thus not utilizing the proper absorption of vitamins B6 and folic acid.

I have more info, but my summary is getting pretty long. Feel free to contact me via www.shaklee.net/gemsoffire if you would like some more info. Sorry if I got long winded.

Hope this helps.

Hi S.~

I used the prenatal vitamins from Sam's Club. While I was prego and then after, I still took the vitamins plus folic acid. Good luck...you've gotten a lot of great responses. As always, talk with your doctor and see what they recommend, or talk to a pharamist at the store. I know I always can depend on the pharamists at my local Sam's Club in Indianapolis!

You don't even need a prenatal, any ultivitamin/multimineral is fine. If it doesn't have 800 of Folic Acid, get a separate bottle to make up the difference. My Dr. told me in both pregnancies that she thinks prescribing vitamins is just a way to nickel and dime patients unless your insurance covers them. I by store brand and when I compared them to name brands and my SIL prescription, mine actually had more stuff the body needs!
