hi all, i just recently accepted the challenge of teaching our preshcoolers at church. i am needing some ideas on subjects to teach them. the age group will be 3-5 y/o. so you can see my dilema on why i am having trouble coming up with ideas. the youth leader told us today that we will be teaching the kids on whatever the pastor is preaching on that sunday. lately he has been teaching on faith. any ideas will be greatly appreciated and i thank you all in advance. god bless, R.

Didn't they give you some curriculum? If not you can go to the Christian book store and get a book. You can also download free lessons from the computer- but they aren't always the best. I would suggest taking a trip to the Christian Book Store. You can also get sample material from some of the top distributors of Sunday School/children's church materials if you want to get an idea of what they would be like.

Good for you taking on this important role! I would Google the term "sermons for kids" and look at some of the sites that come up. I've been involved with the children's program at our church, and we had actual materials/books that helped us in guiding the discussion (pretty structured, for ages 4-7). A lot will depend on what is expected within your parish, what resources you have available, how many kids you'll be working with, and how much time you'll have with the children. Has someone else been filling this role already? If so, talk to them for ideas. In general I would try to incorporate some physical "props" to keep the kids focused - they could be posters, toys, household items - whatever you can somehow tie to the theme you are discussing. They are not really for the kids to play with, just to keep them engaged in what you are saying. Many of the sites you'll find can offer some suggestions relating to various readings and/or themes. I also like to do some kind of question and answer thing to keep the kids engaged if the number of kids and ages/maturity allow it. They also typically love to learn songs, and there are many religious songs that would work with kids (at least the chorus). Try to have fun with it. I was often amazed at the responses some of these children had they showed how much they really did "get" what we were talking about. (Of course you also typically get some completely unrelated comments, but you just move past them.) Good luck to you!

You can find curriculum on the internet or in a christian bookstore. Our church bases their weekly lesson on what "year" it is in the liturgical calender.

One thing that would help with tying some of it together is a project (craft) that the children could take home with them, to remind them of the message, and to talk with their parents about what they learned. I know that Oriental Trading has faith based activites and now with it being summer they have their vacation bible school activities out too. Congratulations and good luck!

Children this age can learn a lot about faith. I have found it helps to use any kind of pictures, flannel graph, videos (like Veggie Tales) and make it relate to something in their lives, like family or such. They will learn and remember. Keep the lesson short, their attention span isn't long at this age. Have an acrivity for them to do, color, paste, make something they can take home. This is a fun age and full of promise. Blessings to you and your class.
