My son is turning 4 in August and I am looking for a preschool program for him to attend. I am new to this area so I'm not familiar with the schools. I have been looking into public schools in Louisville, but it seems like it is a very long process. I went to sign him up the other day and they told me it was based alot on income. So I am not sure if he will even qualify. He does have a speech problem and I'm worried that he won't get the attention that he needs. If you have any advice on what I should do I would really appreciate it.

I would at least try to get in to the JCPS system. i too went to enroll my daughter and didnt realize how long it would take but i should be hearing any day and its really only been about a month. if you really want preschool just drive around the area where you live most preschools have signs in the front yard! im not sure what area of louisville you are in so i have a hard time suggesting a school. make sure you mention his speech problem when you talk to jcps b/c there are some schools here that are better than others for that kinda thing
You should call 4-C at ###-###-####. They provide Resource & Referaal info in our area. They can help you narrow down your search for a program near your home and based on the criteria you are looking for (hours of operation, accreditation, etc.)
They may already be full, but you never know what happens at the last second. Both my girls went to Keneseth Israel Preschool for 2, 3, and 4 yr. old. I am not sure where you live, but it would sure be worth the drive. They are located around Bowman Airport on Taylorsville Road. I am sure JCPS pre-school is fine, but KIP is the best preschool in Louisville. The teachers have been there for 10-20 years, very stable, creative, warm learning environment. I just can not say enough good things about the place. It was worth every penny I spent. Shary Hyman is the director and would tell you right away if there is a spot or waiting list.
my son started at jcps when he turned three because he was delayed (speech was also noted as delayed). He was in first steps which I'm sure helped the process out but you might could call the Early childhood office to set up an appointment to have him evaluated. Jefferson County offers a program called Jump Start you can either call the Board or one of the Elementary Schools to find out more.
A little about me: I am a single mother of two a son 21 and daughter 16. I work as a paralegal.
My daughter goes to UCDC (Ursuline Campus Development Center) we are very happy with the school there. They work on potty training. They taught her to put on her jacket, same her full name, show with her hand how old she is, say her ABC's and much more. They start at 1 yr and they also have montessori school which starts at 2yrs. There is also a nice preschool in J-town called St Edwards but my daughter can't go there because she is not 3 yet and they must be potty trained. They are very good too. Also St Edwards is more economical than UCDC. We also looked into Jeffersontown Preschool and since it is closer and not closed for so many holidays and inservice (I work FT) we are going to be sending her there in the fall. I hope this infor helps some. Let us know what you decide.
Almost forgot I visited a daycare/preschool on bluegrass parkway called creative begining and they are right next to a center that works with children with special needs ( I do not know if they have someone like a speech therapist) I wish I paid more attention, but it might be worth a call. She told me that they work with them a lot and they come over and work with the children that have that need.
