of course you want to know how the kids are doing keeping up with whatever the class is doing academically,,,, but you also want to know if they are doing ok with following rules and routine, and if they are happy and play well with the other kids, is there anything the teacher thinks you should spend some time on at home? if they are doing what the class is doing and are happy, what more can you ask right now? and if not, work together with the teachers on it. dont worry :)

i worked for a daycare that they had done a first time and the parents were absolutely thrilled and the teacher was extremely happy that it went well with the parents and her.

For preschool, they will talk about your child's readiness for kindergarten and how they are doing and what they are doing to get them ready for the next step in school. They will talk about behaviors that they need help with or academics that your child is falling short on and what you can do to get them better prepared to handle school when they get to the age of going to Kindergarten. They will talk about how they are socializing and what activities they like and are good at and what they need help with.

My DD is 3 and has been in preschool since Sept. We had our first conference back in November and actually have another coming up next week. At the first conference, we were told about how wonderfully DD had adjusted to the preschool routine and how kind and helpful she was to her peers. We were also told that she was demonstrating strong pre-reading, language and math skills. And that her biggest challenge so far was being patient and learning to wait her turn when she can't do what she wants to do immediately. The teacher let us know what their goals for the year were and what they felt the child should be doing or be close to doing by the time the year came to an end (i.e. DD knows all her upper-case and lower-case letters, so now it's about knowing what sounds they make and being able to figure out what letter starts a word based on the sound). Next week I would expect that it will be more of where DD is now, what we maybe can can work on with her at home, and what the teacher will recommend for next year.
