I think of the very best things you could give them is a card of thanks and a letter of reference from you as a parent for them to add to their professional portfolio.

How about a gift card to a school supply store or a craft store? Let your son make his own thank you card to make it more personal. This way they can get what they want....and can make use of.

I am also a teacher and we greatly appreciate getting gifts that we can use in our classroom because it saves us money. If your son's teacher uses stickers, sticky notes, pens, permanent markers... those would be some good things to get her. Among those maybe give her a small gift card to Sonic, Starbucks, or some other restaurant or teacher supply store she likes to spend money at.

Starbucks gift card for around $10... and a cute thank you note. You could make your own TY cards. Nothing beats a caffeine high... LOL!

I also did a nice mug and stuck chocolates and a box assortment of herbal teas, then wrapped it up and gave those to my son's preschool teachers. They loved it.

Gift card from Oriental Trading is another good one since most preschool teachers like to do crafts with the kids, but budgets limit what they can do.

I gave my son's preschool teachers wine. Another mother though had all of the children sign a serving bowl for each teacher (with a Sharpie) - they loved it, and the kids were proud to sign their names.

I really enjoy getting gift cards and anything I can use in my classroom/for the kids. I always get tons of coffee mugs and things with teacher on them. I cherish the things the children make me. One mother last year made a real cute plaque with her daughter's picture and a poem on it. She framed it and I just love it. It is on my bookshelf in the basement. Another cute craft I was given: Trace your child's hand on construction paper etc. and cut it out. Stick it on a bottle of lotion, tuck it in a card with a gift card etc. You can write something like "Hands down...you are the best teacher" etc. I have a little handprint on my fridge!

My daughter just got thank you notes back from her teacher and her assistant teacher. In her assistant teachers note she said it was the nicest gift she has received in her ten years being an assistant.
I have a program on the computer from which I took a picture that I took of my daughter on her first day of preschool. (But it would be easy to hand make one too) Underneath the picture I put her name and the year. Then I asked my daughter three things she liked about each teacher. I put that next to the photo. I titled it 3 things I liked about Mrs. ____. Inside I had my daughter sign it, then I wrote a personal note from myself.
Oh and then I stuck just a $10 giftcard to Barnes & Noble. Something where they could purchase a book for the classroom or pick up a book to read for summer.
Oh and I also had my daughter write their names and decorate the envelope. It was cute because for her teacher she drew herself and her teacher on the envelope.

As a long time teacher myself, I also vote for practical things for the classroom. Please do not send things that are hard to store too, with so much to pack, save, clean, etc. I broke a few things that I loved, but had such a hard time storing... sadly they are gone. I have to say a gift card to barnes and noble or amazon.com is best for me. I don't drink coffee, wine, buy my own bath stuff... blah blah. I hate sounding picky, but I also hate having people waste their money. I prefer a simple handmade card from the child and then a gift card. Our class parents always give us Amex or visa gift cards and I always send them a note to tell them what I used it for. A personalized clipboard would be cute too, since I can use it. Anyway, jsut ideas. Thanks for asking!!

A mom in our preschool had the nice idea of pooling a few moms together to get the teacher a gift certificate for a massage. Seems that a relaxing moment is well deserved by those who take care of our rowdy little ones...

I was going to go get a bunch of things from bath and body works which is something most women love. Or you could get a gift card from bath and body works.

You can try to get a personalized gift maybe something with his/her name on it, like a mug I do it for all of my son's teachers if you order today you will have it in time. Good Luck! Or you can have your child make something buy a frame and frame it.

I have to agree with other teachers here... what we really need are things we can use practically. Not that a mug or t-shirt with a picture of the class isn't cute, it's just not useful in the long run. (consider that we usually have at least 20 students each year... over time, that's a lot of mugs and crafts).

I really love the idea of writing a heartfelt letter that she/he could one day use in the portfolio if ever needed. Not to mention that the greatest feeling is when a parent (and a child) says that we made a difference in the child's life.

Thank you so much for being appreciative of your child's teacher. You have no idea how much it means to be thanked in this profession- it's normally a profession of criticism, and especially lately with budget cuts and new standards to maintain, we often don't get thanked at all.

I wrote a nice note saying, "Have a sweet summer" and enclosed a GC for $10 to Dairy Queen.
