Little boys at that age are very aware of the differences between boys/girls. I would do a princess and pirate theme. Good luck!
My to be 6 daughter is having boys at her birthday this year...we bought princess loot bags but is it OK to give these to the boys or should i do a pirates and princess theme? Sorry for such an idiotic question, i have not paid attention to this sort of thing at other parties.

I don't think you need to buy separate bags for the boys, but you might want to customize some of the "loot" if the stuff you are giving out is mostly princess related (e.g. princess rings, princess wands etc). If you are giving out more unisex items (e.g. candy, fruit snacks, pencils, bubbles etc) I don't think it matters what the bag has on the outside.
One year, we had the same situation. I bought plain white paper bags with handles at the craft store and had the girls decorate princess purses and the boys decorate pirate loot bags. We had markers, stickers, glitter etc. Then the kids used those bags for the pinata and any other goodies we gave out.
I would get some pirate or plain. I think my seven year old would be mortified if he got a princess bag. Not a huge deal of course, but the boys might appreciate not getting princess bags.
as long as you don't have lip glosses or anything else that is for girls IN the bag a princess bag would be fine. Kids realize that the bag matches the theme. My boys have received them and have not cared at all.
The boys need to be separate...knights, superheroes or pirates...
I think you should have different stuff. At 6 they are more likely to care. I just saw some cool pirate necklaces and other stuff on OTC this morning. I was looking for my kids' parties too and they do have some cute things that isn't total junk. As the others said though, I think if the outside of the bag is princess but the inside is pirates it will be fine. If you're worried you could always just use a plain paper lunch sack for the boys.
I just asked my 6 year old, and he said he would be upset if he got a princess bag. Not sure how much time you have, but Walmart has those bags pretty cheap. They have Spiderman, Avengers, Cars, Toy Story - lots of great themes for boys.
At my daughter's recent 5th birthday party, which had a Disney/Pixar "Brave" movie theme, we did "Brave Knight" favor/loot bags for the boys at the party (as opposed to the girls' "Princess Merida" loot bags). They had "Brave Knight Seeds" (bags of M&M-like colored chocolate candies with a custom label - printable file purchased on Etsy) and keychains/zipper pulls with knight images on them included in their bags. We purchased the actual 'knight' bags on Etsy, too. Etsy has great, inexpensive, unique party stuff. The boy guests seemed to like the "knight"-themed stuff. Good luck with your party!
I would get some plain brown lunch bags for the boys.
In theirs put in a pirate patch, small fake sword, Matchbox car & some mini chocolates like a Milkey Way).
