PRK Eye Surgery

I don't know what kind of lasik it was but I had it done in 2003 & LOVE IT!!! I've worn glasses or contacts since 1st grade & my prescription was a -9.5, really really bad. I went to the lasik dr. that my long time optometrist (Dr. Conrad Bryan ###-###-####, 2913 N Belt Line Rd, Irving, TX) recommended. It didn't take very long & my husband watched it on a TV outside. I only wish that I had done it sooner!

I haven't personally had it done, but my father-in-law has had both eyes done within the last year. It was amazing! No glasses, no tinting and very little recovery time. Because he was older, the doctor insisted on removing the cataracts and damaged tissues. The doc said regular lasik wouldn't remove the damaged tissue and it can cause a delay in healing or worse, it can continue to grow and attach itself to the new lenses. If you're on the fence, ask the doctor for some time to sit down and address each of your issues and weigh the pros and cons. Good luck!

My husband just had the PRK done at Lasik plus for the same reason last weekend. They are very good there. We went to Boothe first and they are terrible.

The procedure is MUCH more painful and takes a lot longer to heal and see. He had it done on Thursday the 14th and stayed in pain until Monday. He literally slept the ENTIRE weekend only getting up to eat a little and go to the bathroom. When he woke up, and got out of bed on Monday, he could only see 20/40.
Everyday gets better but it's a lot of recovery time. He is happy that he can see better every day, and when I asked him if it was worth it, he said yes.

However, if you are alone taking care of the kids, I would NOT do it. If you can get A LOT of help for a least a week, you could probalby handle it. I have three girls, 5, 3 and 1 and there is NO WAY I could do a surgery like this without help. My husband travels and I don't have help.

I'm not saying not to do it, I'm just saying, be prepared for a longer healing process and not being able to see perfectly for at least 3 weeks. Good luck!!!!

R., my husband is an optometrist in McKinney and is very knowledgeable in lasik, intralase, and prk. Before he opened his own practice, he ran a very large surgery center. First, like any other procedure, I would probably get a second opinion. Not all facilities are the most current with their lasers and don't allow patients to have lasik but a center with the most advanced laser may be able to do it. Again, my husband has screened thousands of patients for surgery and is very knowledgeable and TRUSTWORTHY. If anything, he could discuss the prk procedure with you at length to help you feel more comfortable. My name is T.. I got Lasik done by Dr Tylock in Irving about 4 yrs ago. I upgraded to the "latest & greatest" at the time, which may be what you are mentioning. I recall them saying this new process would not leave scar tissue so if I wanted/needed to have it done again in 10-20 yrs I would be able to. Your eyes will continue to change over time, as they would without any surgery. I was amazed with how simple and painfree the surgery was. I'm still seeing better than 20/20 and I've been thrilled with my results. Hope this helps.

I had the PRK surgery, and it is the greatest thing I have ever done! I had to have PRK (no flap) instead of Lasik because my corneas are not thick enough to have part removed and have enough left over for a flap (which was an acceptable explanation that I could understand). My doctor also said that he really prefers the PRK because there is no leftover flap to go back over and compromise any of the work that was done.

Was I back at work the next day like my Lasik friends? No. Was it the most horrible experience in the world? No. I had mine done in Wichita Falls, which is where I live, at Suggs Eye Center. They are wonderful, but obviously there are wonderful places in Dallas. I was given a sleeping pill that caused me to sleep pretty much all day, brief wake up for dinner, and then through the night. I was a bit uncomfortable for a few days, and it took a couple of weeks for my vision to be completely clear...but it was 1000% worth it.

I wasn't a mommy yet at the time, but I did it knowing that I would be in the next few years. With my son, I can't imagine being dependent on contacts/glasses now - it is the greatest thing I have ever done!!!

My husband had Lasik done last year, and he used Dr. Tylock. He was wonderful! My husband had the intralasik done, which is where they create the flap with a laser instead of the blade. Dr. Tylock was our first choice, and we did a lot of research. The results are wonderful! My husband has 20/15 vision now. Good luck!

Hi! My name is V., and I just got my eyes done with lasik surgery by Dr. Booth in Plano, TX. I have a 1 yr. old daughter, and was refusing to have more kids until I got my eyes done. So, my husband got me an appt. with Dr. Booth and a week later, my eyes were fixed with Lasik surgery, and I am so happy that I did it! I have no worries. When I have to get up in the middle of the night or early in the morning to check on her, I can see perfectly fine. I LOVE it! I just got them done on Jan. 2nd. Everyone around kept telling me how good this dr. was, so I went ahead and tried him out. He personally told me that he has done more procedures with Lasik than any other dr. in the world! I was impressed. So, I really hope you decide to get them done...I am so happy that I did! Good Luck

I had PRK done by Dr Tylock in the summer of 2005. I had it on a Thursday. The surgery itself was a breeze, as were the few hours afterward. The next few hours and days, however, were pretty painful, Saturday afternoon, night and Sunday morning being the worst. They had given me two Vicodin, which they suggested I cut in half and take as needed. It was not enough! However, that being said, I would go through it again in a heartbeat, and will if my eyes start going bad again. It was well worth 24 to 48 hours of pain for the freedom from glasses and contacts. I would go for it if I were you!
By the way, I also have b/g twins, they're 13 months old. Good luck!
Oh, and the only other things I've noticed are additional dryness in my eyes since I had the surgery, and for about 6 months following the surgery my eyes were more sensitive to sunlight, so be ready with the eye drops and sunglasses!

I went to Clearview Eyecare and Laser Center for Lasik. They were absolutley WONDERFUL. The staff and dr's were very courteous and warm but at the same time professional. You never feel rushed when you are there unlike some other offices. Dr. Ryne actually suggested to me to do only my left eye because my right eye was not even that bad. I went to Lasik Institute first and they laughed at me and asked why I wanted to do that. Plus then there was going to be a surcharge for only doing 1 eye. There was no surcharge with Dr Ryne. If anything at least get a second opinion from them. They are not about making you spend money if you do not need it. They really care and want you to be happy. I had lasik done 10 years ago and it's great. Don't go to a stop in place. Go to either Jeff Whitman (Key Whitman) or Dr. Booth. I did Whitman and requested that he see me personally. He is one of the best. It may cost more but your eyesight can't be fixed if someone messes it up. Jeff Whitman is excellent. He is down at Lemmon and Central area (they have a Plano office as well). Whitman works alot with older eyes as well so he has seen it all. He is up on all of the latest technology. Remember with Lasik, it only takes one hair of a laser mishap to ruin your life. Jeff Whitman is THE BEST. Definitely make the investment with the best.

I had the PRK surgery at LasikPlus and it was somewhat intense however not unbearable. Adhere to the instructions with resting your eyes afterwards(I went to lunch after my surgery and was okay)and expect not to be able to drive for about 3 to 4 days. I would not encourage too much night driving until the sensitivity to light diminishes. I'm very pleased with the results and amazingly my has vision continued to improve for about 6 months after surgery. I hope this helps and good luck if you decide to do it.

I would definately get a second opinion before having it done. I have several friends that have had lasik and are thrilled with the results. I know the one friend used Dr. Boothe and another Dr. Whitman. Your eyes are too important to take chances with and a second opinion would confirm the need.

I went to Key Whitman...Love them and love the surgery. I walked out of the surgery able to "see" without glasses for the first time since I was 8 years old. I cried...it was incredible! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I had PRK done last June and I love not having to mess with glasses and contacts after wearing them for 18 years! However...my BIG warning about PRK is the potential for a very slow recovery! I was told that I would be back to work in 4-5 days, but actually was not able to drive for more than 3 weeks. I was so miserable for those 3 weeks after surgery because I felt helpless without my sight. I would recommend doing one eye at a time so you are not left without sight in both eyes for an extended period of time. Good Luck!

Something to check on. What happens after 20 years and you get cataracts. I have heard some of the lasik surgeries prevent surgery on cataracts later in life. Whick is not good because Then you go blind. Some things are not disclosed up front.

My husband and I had lasik at the Key Whitman Eye Center (me last year, my husband two years ago). I highly recommend them. We are both seeing better than 20/20. A cousin of mine just had the PRK. It required a lot longer healing time than ours did with the flap. I recoommend getting a second opinion. LasikPlus does not have the reputation of the doctors at Key Whitman, Booth or Carter Laser Centers. You only get one chance at your eyes. Do not go with a great price because you get what you pay for and what better thing to spend your money on than perfect vision? Good luck in your quest. My brother-in-law is a laser technician (intralase). This is what he said:
"If your cornea depth is not thick enough, they probably recommended PRK. The thing with PRK is that there's a recovery time of a week. Within that week, you will be itching the entire time and her vision won't stabilize until 6 months later. The site she went to may not do intralase. Intralase is more expensive than PRK."

If you have more specific questions about intralase, I'm sure he'd be happy to answer you. My husband had it done a few months ago, and he's very happy with it. He had a longer recovery time than most because he had a bad astigmatism, but he's still very happy with the results.
