Problem with Pierced Ears

I had not worn earrings for a couple of years and recently started up again. My ear lobes got swollen, painful and hard and there was bleeding from the pierced holes. I have always worn gold earrings, usually 18 carrat. Has anyone had a similar problem, and what type of "metal" earrings did you have to use to prevent an infection. Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

Try the sensitive earrings at like Walmart,Claires etc... Dab them in Neosporin and or put Neosporin on the holes everyday. Peroxide works great if there is a infection.

Works great for my daughter and I.

Put Neosporan (sp?) on it. Our daughter had her ears pierced about 3 months back and was having a very simialr problem even after the 6 weeks. I talked with the lady who pierced her ears and she said to dab the antibotic cream on the front and back each time you change the earrings. It took 4 days and she does not have the problem any longer.

I would try using vitamin e oil on your ears too. Its a natural healing agent. I used it on my daughter when her ears were pierced at 3 months, she is now 13 months and I have yet to have a problem with them. The oil healed her ears in one week, and I never used the solution they gave us, it dried her ears out. Good luck!

I have a terrible time with metal allergies. When I was a little kid, my mom got my ears pierced and the holes got infected and "keloids" (hard scar tissue/permanent skin damage) developed. After having the infection lanced by a doctor, I was urged to let the holes close up or risk more serious problems. My lobes were pretty ugly by the time everything was said and done.

Years later, when I was in high school, I dared try to pierce my ears again. But the second time around was a success. But it's alot of work. Here's what I do;

First of all, I could not have my ears pierced in the same place as before because of the hardened scar tissue. So I had my ears re-pierced in a different place close to the original site.

I avoid all cheap jewlery. If it isn't pure silver or gold, I can't wear it because my ears will first have an allergic reaction to the metal. Then an infection will set in. The metals I totally avoid are nickel, aluminum or any jewlery that is "plated" even if it's gold or silver plated. Even if the packaging says hypo-allergenic, beware. If it doesn't claim to be at least a 14K etc., it usually means a cheaper metal is underneath, and as the plating peels or fades, the allergy causing metal pokes through causing problems.

If for some reason my ears do flare up (which happens sometimes, even with gold/silver, I dip my lobes in hydrogen peroxide, and put an anti-biotic cream on them until they calm down. I also will soak or clean all my jewlery in a peroxide bath to cut down on irritation.

Also avoid heavy jewlery, and dangling jewlery as much as possible. These things can help irritate your ears. With the exception of special occasions, I generally just wear a pair of 14 K gold earrings or my diamond studs (real silver posts) and leave them in semi-permanently.

Hope this helps.

B., I would recommend going to a place that does tatoos and piercings. My mom had severe metal allergies and she now goes to a piercing artist for her every day earrings with no trouble at all!
You can use a product called colloidal silver at the site of your infection and it will clear it up in no time.

i had one earring that kept giving me problems and i would coat my earring postb in neosporin to help heal it up. YOu can buy clearcoat to "paint" on your earring posts to help with sensitivity..thats what my mom needs to use.

After many struggles with my ears getting infected, I found surgical steel and my ears were finally happy! (along with sea salt / warm water soaking to aid in healing and drawing out infection) I had trouble finding pretty surgical steel earrings though for myself and so I finally started making them myself. I then also discovered 100% hypoallergenic, nickel free Niobium. Niobium is similar in properties to titanium which is also 100% hypoallergenic. These are elemental metals - NOT a mixture of metals (which often contain nickel). They are not as mainstream as other jewelry metals but Niobium is gaining in popularity. I sell my earrings on etsy and many people have reported being able to comfortably wear earrings finally with it. They are ultra comfortable and I often forget I'm even wearing earrings at all. My shop is Pretty Sensitive Ears, found at http://www.prettysensitive.etsy.com - and is all about earrings for sensitive ears.

It may not be the metal, it could be the bacteria too. make sure to clean them several times a day with a solution made for piercings. I also put antibiotic ointment on my daughters ears and they usually clear up within a day
