Problems Nursing My Son!

Its not unusual for babies to have a favorite side. So if you usually start on the right, try starting on the left when he is more willing to nurse since he is most hungry at the begining of the feeding.

Could he have an ear infection? Perhaps one ear is hurting if this is a recent development.

Not all babies turn away when they are "done" sometimes they like to suck for comfort long after they have emptied a breast.

One thing to keep in mind is that is not really necessary to nurse both sides during each feeding. The longer they nurse, the more fatty hind milk they get. Most women I know nurse new babies on one breast each feeding unless they are making a fuss about still being hungry.

Are you using a bottle often? He might be having nipple confusion. I would get in touch with a lactation consultant. She would be able to give you all the help you need. I highly recommend Judy Eastburn. I don't have her number on hand but if you google it I know she will come up. She's in Allen and she is very professional and the best!

I nursed my son on only one breast per feeding, he would drink until milk was coming out of his nose and he passed out! But if I unlatched him or tried to switch sides even after 10min he would stop nursing. At almost 7 months I still only do one side at a time.

I agree to try nursing on one side per feeding. It may be that your son is full and trying to let you know he is done. My son only nurses for about 5 -8 min for a feeding. He is a very efficient feeder and is definetley getting enough (he is huge!) So maybe he is really done when he starts showing signs of frustration.

I noticed this problem when I would nurse my daughter. I read up on it and realized that the problem was in switching the breasts after 10-15 minutes or so. I let her nurse completely on one side, burp her, change her diaper & then offer the other side. Sometimes she eats on both sides, sometimes only on one. Allowing her to nurse completely provided the hind milk which is the most fattening & satisfying. Hope that helps

I had a very similar problem with my son. My lactation specialist said I was actually producing too much milk. The forceful spray was causing him to unlatch and fuss. Her suggestion was exactly what everyone else was saying, nurse only on the one side at each feeding. Just as somebody else said, your son will get the fatty milk and should satisfy him.
