Pumped Breastmilk Going Sour

I'm a lactation consultant and nursing mom. Milk can smell sour if a mom has more of the enzyme that breaks down fat (lipase) in her milk. There is nothing wrong with your milk and can still feed it if your baby doesn't mind. If he does, try heating the milk to a scald (not boiling) after pumping then cool/freeze as needed. This inactivates the lipase. Hope this helps!

My sister and I both had occasion to freeze some. Of course, it needs time to defrost before you can use it, but it generally keeps in the freezer for as long as you nedd.

You might want to check with your doctor to find out if it is a symptom of a condition you may have developed, just to be on the safe side.

I had to pump milk for my daughter when she was first born because she wasn't latching on correctly. I stored my milk in the fridge and it did turn a little yellow, appearing to be sour but it wasn't! It did separate so i did have to shake it up pretty good before giving it to her. So I don't know... maybe it's not sour like you think. Good luck!

Are you storing it at the BACK of the fridge where its coldest? What makes you think its going sour? Breastmilk doesnt sour that easily, so it leads me to believe something else is going on.

I agree with the others, it's probably a storage issue. Go out and buy a thermometer. Try to keep this milk at 37 degrees. Store milk on the bottom shelf (heat rises, cold sinks) to ensure it's as cold as can be. Good luck!

I had the same problem, in a sense, my son wasn't eating fast enough so i had a lot of extra milk to store. I froze my milk . that way i knew it wouldnt go bad, i would set aside certain times that i knew i had more production. If you are making enough iwould store it in the freezer.just a idea
