Pumping - Rockwall,TX

I was wondering was it too late for me to start breastfeeding my son again. I had stopped when he was about a month old because it was hard for him to latch on since my nipples were really big and I just pumped and gave him expressed milk. The problem is I know I'm not producing enough milk. I mean I'm barely keeping up with him and I want to continue to give him breastmilk. I want to increase my supply and how often should I pump, he's almost 4 months old. Please help.

What can I do next?

The BEST resources I've found are www.kellymom.com and La Leche League...at 4 months (my daughter is about 3.5 mo) they're probably eating several times a day, probably every 3 hrs except for a 4-5 hr "sleep" period...you will need to pump that often...the BEST thing you can do is pump a little extra and bottle it...then STAY IN BED WITH HIM for around 3 days doing nothing but nurse, nurse, nurse...this will build your supply back up (the more he nurses, the more you make) ALSO, keep in mind YOUR BODY DOES NOT RUN OUT OF MILK! That's an old wives' tale...once the baby has drunk the capacity immediately available in your breasts, your body will make more WHILE baby is nursing so only use the pumped milk if baby gets upset...

You can definately rebuild your supply and begin breastfeeding again, the key is demand nursing...nurse ANY time the baby exhibits signs of hunger...

GOOD LUCK!

With my kids I didn't produce well at all. I ended up pumping and mixing with formula. That way they got the good stuff from me they needed as well as the nutrients from the formula. They told me to pump as often as every 20 mins and than slowly you can expand that time. But you have to pump for a long time as well. They also say make sure you are relaxed, maybe do something else while you are pumping (watch tv or read a book for example)...sometimes having your baby near helps you produce more. You can bring this issue up to your doctor. he/she might have better suggestions. I was told there really isn't any true evidence that breadtfed babies are better or healther than formula babies. The best stuff for your baby is the Colostrum if your baby got that you are doing fine. Good luck.

Regarding pumping, milk production is pretty much a supply and demand thing. If you want to increae your supply you should pump for 5 minutes immediately after you nurse your son to trick your body into thinking he wants more than he does. At first you will get little to no milk. If you continue, however, after a couple of days you will start to produce more.

You might also try "Mothrer's Milk" or fennugreek tea to increase your supply. You can get it at GNC.
