Pumping While on Vacation and Away from Baby

I will be leaving with my husband for a six-day vacation and leaving the kiddos home with grandparents. Our youngest is about 3 1/2 months old and is exclusively fed breastmilk, either from me or in a bottle. I work two days a week and pump while I'm at work as well as once or twice a day when I'm home. Sometimes my breasts don't empty after pumping most of the day at work until I get home and nurse. I'm starting to worry what will happen while I'm gone and can't nurse! Any tips for pumping for six days straight? I just don't want to end up with mastitis! Thanks mamas!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

This was a while ago, but our vacation was great! The baby and her brother and sister did just fine with their grandparents!! The first night I slept all night and didn't wake up to pump and paid for it the next day. I pumped regularly from then on and didn't have any problems. It was a much needed time of rest and relaxation for my husband and I!

I would really recommend renting a hospital grade pump for your vacation. That way you can get the most efficient pumping possible while you are away from your baby. Also, do some deep massage of your breast toward your nipple while pumping to make sure you are emptying the ducts near your chest wall. That should lessen the chance of mastitis by maximizing your breast emptying while you are pumping. Also, try to do something relaxing while pumping, like looking at a picture of the baby, or reading a book, so you aren't just obsessing about the bottles getting fuller. And last but not least, drink plenty of water so you don't get dehydrated and have the work against you, and pump on a schedule at least as often as the baby nurses at home. Still, even while doing all that you might have a little bit of a production dip while you are away. Try to plan for a day or two after you get home to spend lots of time in close contact with the baby and nursing very frequently to get your supply back up.

If you do notice that you are getting blocked ducts, hard spots or discomfort while you are away start immediately taking antinflamatories like ibuprofen for the pain, apply heat for ten minutes before pumping, and massage out the lumps while pumping to release the milk. Also, if you don't feel like you are fully empty after pumping, try to pump for five minutes after you stop seeing milk to try and get another let down. Hopefully those things can stave off a case of mastitis before it gets bad.

Get plenty of rest, have fun, and good luck. :)

Wow to even imply your baby will have mental problems from a vacation is rude! I agree with the other posters about massaging from your chest out to make sure everything's being cleared. And use heat to ease any discomfort. And don't worry i hardly think 6 days away from your baby is going to scar them for life! Look at the babies in the NICU there's lots of them who don't see their mommies for sometimes longer and they turn out just fine! Enjoy your trip!

I've never pumped because that wasn't yet being done when I was a nursing mom. But some young friends have observed that pumping goes much better for them when they are looking at pictures of their beautiful babies, imagining holding and nurturing them. Multi-tasking can cut down on the milk flow, and getting enough hind-milk is important, because that's where the richest nutrients are.

Not so sure about how well it helps in really emptying the breast, though. I hope you get some suggestions from moms experienced with pumping.
