Question About 19-Month Old, Teething & Eating

I believe my 19-month old may be teething. For the most part, his teeth erupted late (at 19-months, he has only 8 teeth; 4 up top and 4 on the bottom). Recently, he hasn't been eating any of the things that he used to eat in the past. On Wednesday, he had a fever of 102. I gave him some Tylenol, and it helped. However, early the next morning, I had to give him more because his temperature was 101.6. Since then, he hasn't had a fever, but I've given him some Tylenol to help with the pain I assume he's feeling. His sleeping habits have changed as well. At night, he wants to sleep in the bed with us, and he's very restless while he's sleeping. Could all of these things (his change in eating and sleeping habits, fever, and restlessness) be caused by teething, or should I call my pediatrician? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone! Thanks to all for the wonderful advice. I'm a nurse, but I guess I'm a horrible patient/Mommy of the patient. =) He hasn't had a fever since the last one of 101.6. I looked at the info someone sent me about roseola, and it looks like he may have something like that or similar. He's got a rash on his legs and his arms (especially in his antecubitals). If the rash persists, I'll definitely call the pediatrician. Most of my co-workers and nurse practitioners that work with me think I should wait it out. His appetite has improved (he wasn't eating anything but soft items <i.e. mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, yogurt, etc>), but now (for the most part), he's back to eating the things he used to eat. Again, thank you all so much for your help and kind words. You have no clue how helpful you all have been. =) Love, S.'

S.,

You've gotten a lot of GREAT advice here. If you're going to wait until Monday to call the Dr., see if he is uncomfortable lying down. That's a classic sign of an ear infection.

When you say he doesn't want to eat his usual things, is he eating anything? Also, don't mask his symptoms before going to the Dr. Tylenol not only takes down the fever, but relieves aches and pains that may lead the Dr. to diagnose correctly.

Good luck! Hugs and kisses are the best medicine until then.

teething can cause many things. How do you feel when you have a bad tooth or headach? When in doubt call the doc's office

Sounds more like a typical ear infection to me. Check with your doc. Ear infections will cause sleep disturbances.. and sometimes are the ONLY sign... but if your child is running a fever... that is another sign. Most of the time the doc will prescribe an antibiotic, but many common ear infections go away just as quickly without any treatment (antibiotics). Tylenol or children's motrin (my fav choice) will help with the pain. The motrin is great for the anti-inflamatory part, too - reduces the swelling inside the ear, which is a big help in reducing the pain. Check with your doc... doesn't sound like teething to me.

I would definately take him in.. from my experience he probably has an ear infection. I wouldnt think that teething would cause such a high fever.

I don't think that teething is supposed to be causing a temperature that high. My guess would be an ear infection (often times we saw teething and ear infections go hand in hand with our daughter, who is now 2 and a half). If his fever persists, I would take him to the doctor. A great book that I found helpful was "Healing Childhood Ear Infections" by Dr. Schmidt.

definately sounds like teething or another change in life is affecting him. Kids are pretty good judge of when they need just a little more mom-time. My girls go through high-needs periods - growth spurts, teething, changes in routine at home or at school. Teething can also cause a runny nose. As for the fever, I go with the theory of the body needs the fever, so I don't give Tylenol just because of the fever but wait until they are no longer able to play or sleep through it. Keep trusting your instincts.

It sure sounds a lot like teething, the only thing I would question with the doctor (maybe you can call the nurse) is the fever. I didn't think fever was supposed to go that high with teething. My daughter is 14 months old and just cut her first molar and is doing the same thing with eating, she's recently become very picky and she has some restless nights. Maybe the pain becomes worse at night? I'm not sure. Hang in there, it will pass! I would try to not let him sleep with you though, I know it's hard but we made that mistake with our first and she is almost 3 1/2 now and we still have to lay down in her bed with her at night to get her to sleep and then she still comes in our bed every single night at some point. It's a very tough habit to break! Good luck and hang in there! :)

I have an 18 month old that has all of his teeth, so i went through all that fun stuff when he was a little younger. my son is a good boy for the most part and the only time he had trouble sleeping or wouldn't eat or had a fever or became completely unhappy with no visual reason was when he was teething...just grin and bare it girl, it'll be over before you know it! I did hear that popsicles helped sooth the pain or atleast calm down your lil one for a bit. I always felt helpless when he was teething because i felt like I followed all the proper procedures and he was still upset. Tylenol became my best friend during that time, so just know you'll make it. Good luck!

I would definitely call the pediatrician as fevers from teething are not normally that high. Sounds more like an infection.

CALL YOUR PEDIATRICIAN NOW...two days of fever over 100.degrees and I would contact the doctor. Just call and talk with them, they are propablly are going to tell you to bring him in. You know there are so many different things that it could be and we should never ASSUME anything when it comes to illnesses.....don't wait.

Hi S.. I have two kids, one is eight and the other just turned three, and I found the best product to get us all through teething...Hyland teething tablets. You can find them at health food stores and even Wal-Mart. It is a product that I swear by. I have even used it for my own wisdom tooth pain. Give it a go and also frozen "anything" that your little one can suck or chew on is a BIG help. Good Luck Sweetheart!

Though he may be teething, with a fever that high (and the lack of wanting to eat and the sleeping issues) would lead me to believe he's actually got a bug of some sort. he may even be teething on top of that too which will all cause that behavior. But a fever means the body is fighting infection.
Have you tried baby Motrin? I found it worked better than Tylenol (with both teething and fevers) and more importantly it works longer (up to 8 hours of relief), which is important at night when everyone needs their sleep. It helps with both pain and fevers and can actually be taken with Tylenol--though I wouldn't do that unless he's got a fever spiking and your are having problems controlling it(where you would alternate btwn Tylenol and Motrin but never giving more than the recommended dose of either).
Anyways, give the little guy some time and TLC. It's hard to figure things out at this age since they can't tell you what is wrong. If the fever persists or he gets some other symptoms like diarrhea--I would recommend bringing him in to see his pediatrician.

You should always call your PED if you feel un-easy! I have an 18mo old and she is going through the same thing. You should buy the homeopathic teething pills..can get them at any Publix....natural....give them 3 before naps/bed, etc...they dissolve in the mouth with saliva...help with any discomfort and are okay for babies...I used them with all five kids...makes teething so much easier...no issues! this will help with the discomfort. EAting habits always change...they can go from "starving" to "not eating anything"...as long as its not prolonged for 3-4 days and they take fluids....you are fine. Dont worry...and use your motherly instict....He'll be just fine! THey say if adults wuold go through "teething" we would NOT be able to withstand the pain...so help him with the discomfort for sure!
