Question About 2Nd Baby Foods

We just started out baby on (Gerber) stage 2 foods. With stage 1 we (per dr. reccomendations) feed her the same food for 3-5 in a row to make sure there were not allergies. With these new foods I'm just wondering if we should do the same thing. Some of them she has had before and some not. For example, we started w/banana, peach, & granola- she's had all those fruits - but I bought apples & cheeries and she ahs not had cheeries. So just curious what other moms have done.Thanks.

What can I do next?

you should be fine, you can do the same thing if you want, or you could just wait until there is some sort of reaction and then eliminate foods and test which one it was.
anyway,
if you have a formula fed baby, any constipation (not the lack of stool, but the painful or difficult passing of stool) you can absolutly add a little bit of milled flax to cereal! :D good luck!

I also have my masters in social work - great profession! If you're worried about food allergies, rather than trying to guess, which is very difficult with many #2 and #3 foods, as they often have numerous ingredients - request food allergy tests at your physician. I have one allergic to milk and tree nuts and one allergic to eggs. The child allergic to milk, suffered quite a while before I figured it out. No need in this day and age. Good luck

ya know-i never did listen to the dr on what to feed my kids-they werent a big fan of jarred baby food-so i just went with regular table food-whatever i cooked-thats what they got-only mashed up real good.by 4-5 months old-thats all they had-formula was nasty both kids hated it-so it was to table foods-milk-extra vitamins...my kids are now 26 & 27 not one allergy between the 2 of them...they never had weight issues or stomach problems...so i guess you just need to decide whats best for your baby-the only food my kids dont care for is cooked carrots or peas-but will eat them fresh....good luck....

My doctor told me to still stick to the 3-5 days in between when there is a new food even with the stage 2 because you have already ruled out one, so if there is a problem with the mixed food you would then know the problem food. We are still on the stage one and trying peaches for the first time today. :) Good luck.

If she's had a food and has not had a reaction then you should be fine. But if it's a new food she's never had before I would do the 3-5 days in a row to make sure she has no reaction.

Yes, I always followed the 3-day rule. We have no food allergies in either of our families, so I had no reason to be extra precautious; I was just being careful. I would definitely take your family history into consideration too; if you have a very allergy-prone family, I would be more vigilant about tracking every new food. But around 7-8 months, I stopped the baby food altogether and moved entirely to table food. It's easier for me not to have to make a separate meal for the baby, plus I find that I actually know more about what's in the food I give her now. When I give her apple, I know all she's getting is apple. And now that she's on table food, I'm not worrying so much about food allergies, other than waiting on things like peanuts until after her birthday.

Also, I was a little wary of the Gerber 2nd and 3rd foods, since they seem sometimes to include things that I'm not supposed to give them at less than a year (like some berries and citrus). So as you get into the mixed foods, keep an eye in the ingredients.

I agree with the last poster. Even now that my daughter is 13 months old, we still introduce one food at a time. The more vigilant you are the easier it is to pinpoint any problems. We've had one incident where she developed hives and we were able to figure out what food did it, and that was just a couple of weeks ago.

Good luck and enjoy that baby!

Follow the 3-5 day rule still. if there is something new in the "mix" it's new to her. It's the safest thing to do.

Happy Christmas Eve! :) I followed the waiting rule till after my daughter was well over a year old. If your little one has had one food in a combo but not the other, do the waiting thing to see if there's a reaction to the new food. Good luck, and welcome to the second stage of solids! :)

A.,

I always followed the 3-5 day rule until my baby was a year old, even with stage 2 & 3 foods and table foods.

Congrats on your baby girl,
S.
