Hi Moms,

I am interested in being a Patient Registration Representative (it is also called a Patient Access Representative) at a hospital. In this position, you get patients registered for surgery (verify their insurance, have them fill out paperwork, etc.).

This position requires experience, and I am wondering how I can get this type of experience. Does anyone know if there is some kind of course or certification program I would need to take? Thanks!

What can I do next?

This is one of the quirky things about hospital land... in medical land EVERYTHING requires experience. Kind of in a Catch22 sort of way.

How you get that experience is usually through

- volunteering or
- working in a clinic or
- working in a military/religious/etc. type position
(aka med work overseas) or
- going to school for your RN/MD/or hospital admin OR
- knowing someone

You might inquire if dental clinic experience would count. Most the patient service representatives where i work come to us with no experience. An outgoing friendly personality is the best qualification a person can have. The rest can be trained.

I suggest the any experience in an office setting would count. The hospital will train you for their specific needs.

Call a hospital Human Resources Department and ask what sort of experience qualifies.

My friend worked in our medical billing office doing insurance verifications, claim checks, and appeals letters before getting a great hospital job similar to the one you're describing!
