Hello all, My 7mo old has been eating rice cereal since 4mo and at 6mo we started veggies and later this week we'll be on to fruits. She does really well and seems to enjoy them. Right now she gets 1/2 the gerber 1st foods container once a day along with a 6oz bottle. (overall during the day she eats the following: breakfast a 6oz bottle + 1/4c cereal, lunch bottle and veggie, snack of 6-8oz bottle, dinner is 6oz bottle + 1/4c cereal) My question is, when is it a good idea to start feeding her the whole food container? Our daycare provider thought she seemed really eager to eat and that we could give her a whole containter. I just do not want to over feed her and have her spit up like crazy (happend Sat. when she got a whole container). ANy thoughts would be helpful!

What can I do next?

She should be giving you fullness cues. When i started with my son i fed him about 30 - 60 mins after he had his milk. so inthe morning he would drink at 8 am and i would give him solids at about 9 am. but he was big eater and started ona full container right off the bat. now at almost 8 months he eats between 4-6 ozs of fruits and veggies and 3 tbs of cereal at every meal 3 times a day thats 3 containers of gerber 1 foods :) You need to let your daughter decide as she is the only one that can tell if she is full or not. you could cut her just a few spoonfuls short of the full container then gradully let her work up to eating it all. I know that most of the sample menus that they have out for how a baby should be eating say to feed milk and veggies/fruit at the meal but i have had much better success with keeping the solids and the milk slightly spaced. My son eats what he wants and is growing fine. He is actually lower on the weight scale then most babies his age. At 6 months my son had solids 2 times a day, by 6 1/2 months he was at 3 times a day. Spreading out the same food might help her keep it down. If you notice her wanting solids more often then add another feeding. good luck!

Hi A.,

There is no one way or set amount to feed a baby of a certain age. Go with what feels right and find the happy balance (then once you have, don't be surprised that it changes again!). www.wholesomebabyfood.com has a nice, easy to read chart to help GUIDE you.

We started our daughter at 6 months with one meal and then worked our way through the foods to check for allergies/side affects, then we added a meal, then two. Each meal was about 1 tablespoon of cereal, 1 scoop of formula (I was breastfeeding and wanted to supplement for iron, and about 2 oz. of food (2 cubes of homemade food or about one half bottle of #1 food). We then increased to two meals a day with the same amount. Then to three meals, then to more food at each meal. We now feed her (just turned 1) 3 - 4 meals a day with about 2 tablespoons full of cereal, and about a #2 sized jar of food.

If you make her food, you will have less waste and it is EASY to do and much less expensive! Try the website above or send me a message and I'd love to give you some very easy to use recipes and techniques.

Good luck!

I understand your dilema. My first child was a full term baby and what we did with him was we let him eat until he was done (no more than 1 container) and then when he was hungry again (after eating) we would give him a bottle. The bottle right after feeding could be what is causing the spitting up. I was told when he started eating that his bottle consumption would go down due to him getting some of his nutrients from the food now. My 2nd child is a premie (born 25 weeks on 2/25/08) so we have just started the cereal and she just started getting that 2 times per day.

Hi A.,

If she is eager, yes, keep feeding her, and feed her SLOWLY. It is easy to feed a baby too fast. Often they will start screaming once they have swallowed a bite--they are already looking for more! Pace her feedings.

Also, feed her more smaller meals throughout the day. Throw in a second snack and see how she does.

hi! you didn't say how many times a day that she's getting cereal/vegies (or fruit) so if she is only getting "food" once a day, you may want to add one more feeding in the evening with the other 1/2 container of food and a little cereal. that's what we started to do with our little one (who is now 21/2!). she is also tall for her age and i think that had a lot to do with it-- she had growth spurts. they have a lot of those that first and second year. she may just need a little more for a while and then you'll see it back and forth as she goes through them. hopefully something i said helps!
