Question About My Daughters Unusual Behavior

My daughter is 5 and for about 6 months now she has been whisper repeating herself and sometimes what other people say. She says something out loud and then immediately whispers it back to herself. I asked her why she does it and she says she doesn't know, kind of like she didn't even realize she was doing it in the first place. I left a message with the doctor, but do you think this is something I should even take up with a doctor or just let it run its course, or maybe talk to her teacher and see what she would do?

What can I do next?

I would make an appointment with her doctor to discuss it. Chances are everything's ok and your doctor will let you know and you can forget about it. Better to be precautious and catch it early if it does turn out to be something!

Hmmm I used to do that too when I was about her age!
My mom pointed it out and eventually I stopped. I think I jsut did it for something to do out of bordom maybe?? Strange I know looking back but I remember doing it and liking it but once people started noticing and i knew it was not the norm I broke the habit.
It really becomes a habit and then you just do it.

my son actually does this - i have never thought to have it checked out, he is 7 and has done it for a few years, he does it less now than he used to because i have been pointing it out to him - when i ask him what he is doing he looks embarassed and says "nothing"

he has a couple of other bevavior issues, and tho we have never had him "labelled" we think he probably has adhd with a bit of sensory disorder thrown in.
he is growing out of it though, just to reassure you

Don't worry about it, at this age, you willknow if something is really worg, there will be multiple symptoms and it would be obvious. Just try to have a sense of humor about it for now. Watch the Show that comes on ABC on Wednesday nights, very funny show about the everyday American family. Probably not a child friendly show, but it isn't trashy. The youngest child in the family on the show does this whispering thing too! The parents have a great way of brushing it off and having a sense fo humor about it! I think that it might make you feel better to see the show and watch as an outsider that it is more humorous than worrysome. Your sweet child will outgrow this I am sure and you will look back and laugh at it. Don't worry, all kids do weird things for phases in life!

It could be Tourette's Syndrome, a neurological disorder that can affect kids and adults causing them to do unusual movements or make sounds that they have no control over. Sometimes its eye blinking, shoulder shrugging, clearing your throat, etc. Most of the time they do not realize they are doing these things. I think kids ususally out grow it or it comes and goes. You can read more info at the Mayo Clinic or Wikipedia.

Y.,

I think if it's been going on for 6mo, it should have run it's course. As a mom I'd probably have her checked and maybe screened for something like OCD just to be safe. There are SO many thing available now that can address issues early on. Don't wait and worry. :-)
