Question About Son's Odd Behavior

For the past 3-4 days, my 2 year old has been swiping his hand across his face, brushing his ears, and poking at his nose. My husband describes it as acting like he just walked through a spider's web. I am tempted to say it is nothing, but I don't want it to be something. Has anyone had any experience with anything like this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Took my son to the doctor Tuesday evening. Dr said his left ear looked like it had been infected, but was healing nicely. When I asked AGAIN about the brushing/swiping and indicated that this was my concern, he gave me some drops for my sons ear and that was it. We're two days into the drops and there seems to be no change. We're to do the drops for 5 days. So, we'll see. If it continues after the 5 days of drops are up, I'll be calling the Dr again.

My middle son does that with sinus/ear infections. You'd think he'd have pain as well and tell me so, but he doesn't. The doctor has even told me that he should be in pain and screaming but he doesn't. Any cold symptoms as well? Might be as simple as saline spray or a trip to the doctor for possible antibiotics, if severe enough to warrant meds.

I agree with both ladies. When ever there is a question with your children all ways call their doctor. They have RNs that can help you over the phone and advise you on what needs to be done. No question is a silly question. Good luck.

Hi C.,

Sounds like he might have an ear infection or a sinus infection. You might want to have a doctor check so it doesn't get worse. It's better to be safe than sorry.

With myself, I can always tell when I am getting a sinus infection because my nose and cheeks start itching.

I suggest you take him to see his pediatrician- small children can have ear or sinus infections and show no apparent symptoms of pain. My daughter had a sinus infection that never pained her with the only indications that she rubbed the side of her nose and brushed the area between her eyebrows occassionally.

Hi - Both of my kids have done this. One now six and the other 16mos. Most of the time, it was the itchy ezema but mostly teeth were coming in. I always took them to the dr to be sure there was no ear infection because they just pop up out of nowhere especially when those molars are coming in.

God Bless

Could it be dry skin or ezcema? Is he itching? My son (2yr) has ezcema and he doesn't really scratch but does more like what you're describing. I'd call the ped and talk to them about it.

It might be an allergy. My son's preschool teacher told me that HER daughter's pediatrician called it the "allergy salute" when a child swipes at his/her nose with the back of the hand--it's because the nose is itchy or it tickles. I agree...better to be safe than sorry..maybe get him checked out if it continues a week.
