Question About the Whooping Cough Vaccine 2010 - Columbus,OH

I recently received the vaccine and was "told" that there were no side effects, with the exception of bruising. I was to take a 3 hr. drive only an hour later with my dd who is 20 months to see family. It was only after I was out on the road that the fatigue hit me. There are no hotels to stay even if I did have the money. Now, my arm is hurting. It doesn't come close to labor pains, but it does hurt and I can only raise my arm up halfway. Has anyone else had any issues with the vaccine this year. I am regretting letting those who gave me the shot do it and not going to someone else for it. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, it hurt for a full week with little movement. Afterward, thankfully, it started to get better. Now, I have full range of motion once again. I believe that the person who administered the shot didn't care what she was doing. From now on, I will only get shots from my DOCTOR'S office.

It sounds like you may have got the shot from someone(s)
who were not as competent with shots as you prefer.
So perhaps it wasn't the solution but the technique,
or location, of the shot that made you sore.

I had the pertussus shot last week.
The nurse put it very high on my upper arm,
just below the shoulder.
I had a little bit of tenderness but nothing else.

As for fatigue while driving . . . .
I hope if that ever happens again that you will pull over.
Please do not put yourself and dd at risk
when you are too tired to drive.
I can't imagine the tiredness being connected with the shot.
Perhaps with anxiety or tension about the shot and the trip?

So many variables here. You don't know if maybe the shot was not given in the perfect spot for you. You don't know if you would have had fatigue anyway. You should know that you will be fine very quickly and your arm will stop hurting from this shot. You should also know that pertussis lasts around 100 days. If you had that instead, you would cough until every single muscle in your abdomen was so sore that you wanted to die, and then you would cough some more, pee your pants, vomit, choke, cough some more, not sleep well for 100 days in a row (labor like fatige) and will probably pass this bad boy on to someone else who is unvaccinated or undervaccinated before you even realize how dangerous you are. Babie die from pertussis, and I am sure that if you knew that you passed it to a baby who then died, you would be more than happy, in hindsight, to have had what ever pain you have now, even if the person who "told" you that all you would have was a bruse was wrong. I think that every shot you get comes with the understanding that you could have pain if they hit a muscle wrong, just like everytime you eat shell fish you should understand that there could be a piece of shell in there, and they don't have to warn you about it.

Don't regret what you did. I am glad that you are protected from what is a horrible, horrible illness.

Vaccines, like any medical procedure, can have side effects. Sorry this one was so bad for you. In the future you can alwasy pull titers (blood test) to see if you are already immune to anything for which you may be vaccinated.

I had the Tdap shot in July, which includes whooping cough. No side effects at all - it was just like a flu shot.
