Hi MJ - I don't use Melaleuca myself, but I know people who use and love their products, and I also know distributors as well. From what I know, many of the products are great, especially their cleaning products.
I am also in the network marketing industry (with Arbonne), and I have to say that there are many types of people in the networking marketing business (it takes all type in this world). Unfortunately if only takes one pushy, unethical person to create a bad rap for the rest of us. Luckily however, most people in this business are looking to change their lives, and help others. If you are looking to join this industry, I'd recommend you find a company that:
1) has products that you LOVE and would use personally whether or not there was a business attached to it. If you don't know and love the products yourself, you won't succeed in the business because people won't believe in it anymore than you do
2) find a company that is a good fit for you and that you can stand behind ethically, make sure that it's a stable company that is growing in this market and is associated with the DSA (Direct Seller's Association) and in good standing.
3) Make sure that the company will give you back most or all of your money if you decide that the business just isn't for you so that there is no risk in your investment.
4) find someone that you 'connect' with and enjoy working with to be your sponsor, as you will be spending time with that person learning the business and getting trained.
5) Make sure the company has great 'online' training in place as well, that is FREE! If the company wants you to learn the business, they should provide you with every resource you need to learn the business at your leisure (and maybe that is at midnight online!)
Network marketing businesses are work. They are not 'get rich' quick schemes. They are called NetWORK marketing, not NetEASY marketing. They require that you spread the word about the products and the business. You don't (at least in my business you don't) get paid unless products are sold. This is done by 'sorting' through whether the business or products are a fit for people or not, not by 'pushing' people into it. Give them the info and let them decide. Those that succeed in this business are the ones that put others first before themselves.
As for the person who stated that Arbonne is full of toxins, I'd be careful about making such a blanket statement (especially since there are many of us on this group that are reps in Arbonne). Arbonne does testing above and beyond what is required in the cosmetics industry, we base our research and development on European standards (which by the way are much higher than standards in the US. Over 11,000 ingredients are banned in the European Union and only about 8 are banned in the US). I have personally met the head of our Product Development and know that this company, Arbonne would not include toxins in their products! Our motto is PURE, SAFE, and BENEFICIAL. I wouldn't use anything on myself or my family that would be considered harmful, now that I know better and have educated myself in the market and industry. Although the Cosmetic Database at EWG that people have mentioned is certainly a starting point, keep in mind that it is not perfect. They can not possibly keep up with the changes in product ingredients over time. Many/most of the products that they have reviewed from Arbonne in that database, don't even exist anymore, or they have the wrong/outdated ingredient list on the website, so take it with a grain of salt. As more research and studies are conducted on safety in the world, Arbonne keeps up with that, and make changes to improve our products based in improvements in science and availability of better natural ingredients on an ongoing basis.
Anyhow, off my soap box for a minute....Not every product is right for every person. Everyone's skin is different, so I say try the products for yourself, see if the products change your skin, and maybe, just maybe the business could change your life too.
Good luck MJ!
