Hello,

I am pregnant ( about 6 weeks) for the second time and will be having my first midwife appointment around my 8th week. I am curious and have a question for thoese moms out there that have had at least one child before having twins. Did you have any thoughts or "feelings" that you might be pregnant with twins before you found out from the doctor/ midwife? If so what made you feel / think that ?

Thanks,
J.

So What Happened?

Hello again,

Thank you all for your stories they were full of great feelings and wonderful memories. I thought I would add the reasoning for mine thoughts for having twins. First I did have pregnancy before my son, but it ended in a miscarriage. I was with my husband on vacation in San Francisco. One morning I just started bleeding and passing big clods I was absolutely sure that nothing is going to live through this. Well a couple days later when we got home we immediately went to the midwife to see what happened and make sure everything was all right. To my surprise there was still a living baby inside. But then a few days later I started lightly bleeding. I call the midwife and she told me to tell her if I pass anything larger then a quarter. Nothing that big passed so I thought I was all right. Not that much more time we had our next appointment. Then again to my surprise there was nothing left inside of me. So I was almost positive that it was twins and I lost one before the other. Also My 2 year old told me he wants two brothers. Who know, right?

PATOOI : I want ed to remark about how your son at 5 said he wanted two one of each. Well my son is 2 (27 months) and I asked him what he wanted a brother or sister and his reply was, "I want a brother two of them." So I guess we will find out if the young children are sensitive to the pregnancy vibes!

AUNDEEY Z : I just want to say you give me hope. I had my son at home, and I was a little nervous that my midwife would not deliver twins, but just maybe my worries are for nothing.

I didn't have any feeling or inkling of twins. I just remember that I was much more exhausted.

My son was 5 when we told him he would get to be a big brother. We asked him if he was excited to get a little brother or sister and he said, "I want two, one of each," we laughed and told him he was only getting one.

The laugh was on us. I had a few doctor appointments, the baby was growing well. Late in the fifth month, like less than a week before the sixth month, we went for an ultrasound to verify the due date and holy tamole! We were having twins. Total shocker. The doctor had only heard one heartbeat and never even considered twins or, at least, she never mentioned it aloud.

I was in a daze for weeks, I just couldn't believe it. A month later I was on bedrest and a month after that the little cuties made their debut. We never did find out the sex prior to the birth, so my poor son only got half of his wish, he got two, but they were both boys. Those boys turned 10 today. Thanks for the question, got me teary-eyed remembering how little they were and now they are so big.

My first signs were the extreme fatigue and being much larger than before. Everyone kept telling me second pregnancies you are going to be bigger, but I felt abnormally large for how far along I was. Family kept asking if I had my dates right. And one night I again brought up how big I was (subconsciously, I knew it was twins, but I kept bringing it up worried something could be wrong) and my dad said in a matter of fact tone - "It's twins." (He's a fraternal twin himself, so it was totally possible to him.)

So my midwife referred me to a place that would do a diagnostic ultrasound and sure enough there were two babies. I literally just started laughing in shock as it wasn't real yet - I was 18 weeks along. The doctor patted my hand and said, "Your laughing now, you'll cry later. But know that it will be alright." He was right.

I was fortunate as I was already doing a waterbirth with midwives and when I told them I was pregnant with twins, they said we would move the birth home since I couldn't have them in a birth center. They were awesome with all of the preventative care and I carried my twins full-term (1 day longer than my first child!) I was super lucky we planned a homebirth as the babies came fast and without warning too! There was no way I would've made it to the hospital or a birth center in time!

I asked a friend who had one, then two years later got pregnant with twins. Twins do not run in either family and they were surprised. They only knew because of ultrasound. And it was a natural conception(no pills,etc..)

I remember standing in the shower one morning before I even know that I was "late" and just had a thought of being pregnant w/ twins flash in my mind. My hubby and I had been ttc for 3 years at that point but had only resulted in early miscarriages and heartache. When I finally went to the OB to find out if I was indeed pregnant, he moved the doppler and lo & behold, there were 2 babies. We'd known for sure since I was 16 days pregnant that we were getting twins. It's been quite a journey ever since :)

I had IVF with both my pregnancies, but with the second the pregnancy hormone levels were quite high when I had the blood test. I just had a feeling that the second time around I was going to get twins... Contrary to popular belief, I'd like to point out that IVF doesn't result in multiples that often, it's just that we hear about them more often. I was the only woman in my age group and with my statistics to get pregnant with more than one in my clinic. In fact my doctor assured me that the chances of my having more than one were extremely slim. Then voila... the twins were conceived! I was also sicker sooner, bigger sooner, etc. I found out at about 8 weeks that I was having twins, but I wasn't surprised...
