Hi A. - I suffer with the same problem myself and I solved it by getting a fabric one! I love it. It looks good, feels good and dries without mildew.
No wonder the hotels use them!
I was looking for any information or suggestions on shower curtain liners. I have a 'mildew resistant' one that has been washed enought times that I think the 'resistance' feature is gone. Does anyone recommend a liner that is not a smelly plastic one? I am happy to wash them, just looking for something that seems to hold up. I do pull the curtain and liner out after a shower in order for them to hang and dry versus clinging to the inside of the tub. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. THANKS

check out this site here. It talks about how toxic shower curtains are and gives a green alternative.. Hope this helps.
after my daughter was born i began using a 'green' shower curtain that is free of chemicals. i bought it at bed bath and beyond. i cannot recall the brand but i know you can purchase them there. it does not smell at all and has not had any mildew or mold build up. i always use the bathroom fan and make sure the liner has room to 'breathe' between showers.
JCPenny sells nylon shower curtain liners. They are mildew resistant in that they are fast drying - no need to hang them outside your tub. They aren't sprayed with any mildew-resistant chemicals. Mildew won't grow on them anyway. They are mashine washable (gentle cycle) and dryable. You don't need a shower curtain since they are not see-through, but they do allow light in. They are so much better than plastic!

we just use a cloth shower curtain as our only one. this was it doesn't fly in and stick to us. these can be machine washed whenever. no mildew yet.
I don't necessarily have advice about the curtain itself like the others have given. However, I can tell you about great cleaning products that I use in my house that are chemical free! Since using them, I don't have the problems that I used to have in cleaning my bathroom. Most importantly they work fantastic & cost less to use in my home! I'd be happy to share what I use with you. Check out the website - www.saferforyourhome.com & feel free to contact me with any questions!
I hate having to use a liner, and I dont like those stiff plastic shower curtains either. What I usually get is the shower curtain that looks like cotton but it isnt. I dont know if it might be polyester. It is very light weight. You'd think you should have a liner with it, but I never have. I wash and dry it every other week and it lasts me a while. When we shower, I put it inside the tub as not to get the floor wet and just draw it across afterwards to dry out. It drys quickly cause it is light weight. Hope this helps some.
I stopped using the plastic curtains years ago. Like you, I got to the point where I was sick of replacing them and found them difficult to launder. A lightweight cotton or blend outer curtain can be used without a liner without any issue. I think they launder so much easier as well. If you're the crafty type, they're pretty simple to make as well.
Hi- I have 2 showers in my home. My husband uses the one downstairs so that he does not wake the children and I use the shower upstairs. Anyway, I have a Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner in my shower and my husband does not, nor does he want one. After you take a shower press the button close the curtain and it cleans the shower 360 degrees. It doesn't replace the good ole' elbow grease but my shower liner has never had a bit of mildew on it since using the cleaner (almost 2 yrs now)where previously I had to change the liner every couple of months. I swear by it. My husband is still changing his liner and refuses to get a cleaner. His loss.
This definately helps with mildew.
Good Luck
I have the same problem. I filled an empty spray bottle with bleach and water. I spray the shower curtain liner with the bleach and water every couple of days and it keeps it mildew free.
Good luck.
I don't know how much light you get in your shower... but at a family "camp" we have, we have heavy sailcloth hanging in the showers and we wash them a couple times a summer.
They are heavy and make it dark in the shower though.
I bought a 100% cotton shower curtain that I use w/o a liner and just keep it inside the tub. I wash it every week or so (needs it every week in the summer)and hang it back up in the shower to dry. I've had it for 3-4 years now. I got it here www.environmentalhomecenter.com.
Hi A., We have begun using fabric liners as well. They are much like a shower curtain just not very pretty, so we put a nice one on the outside. We just toss the whole thing, curtain and liner into the laundry every couple of weeks or so. Had it about 6 months and seems to be holding up great. M.
A., Linens N Things has a good one...it's like $20 I think but well worth it. I bought one and they don't last forever but it sure lasted a very long time.
Hi A.,
I have A polyester one that is quick drying and machine washable. It doesn't get moldy or smell. I believe I got it a Target.
I made the switch back to it because that "new" smell on shower curtains they say is a really bad chemical that should not be inhaled. ... What next?
D.
We got a non-PVC shower curtain at target - it's some other kind of plastic, not smelly and nasty like cheap shower curtains. It cost about $10 and we've had it for AGES with no mildew, and we live in a basement apartment that is very humid.
