Questions About Strep Throat

My daughter, age 3, was diagnosed last week with strep throat. I actually took her to the doctor because she was vomiting and when he looked in her throat her tonsils were so large and inflamed and had the pus pockets on them he said even before the rapid test he was fairly certain she had it. Long story short she was given an antibiotic injection and the doctor said she would start felling better in a day or two. Well, it will be a week tomorrow and she is still not right. She has not run a fever this whole time. We did end up at the ER one night (the night of the diagnosis) because the vomiting was so bad and she was starting to get dehydrated. Every time she looks at food or starts to eat she starts gagging. She wants to eat. She asks for food and milk and water, but with most foods she takes a bite and then gags and tells me her stomach hurts. She is eating some, mostly yogurt and drinking water so I am not too concerned about that, just how long does this last and is this normal. I would appreciate any input.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses and help! My daughter is on oral antibiotics now and is feeling 100% better. Although, after being sick for a week or more she has become quite the drama queen and master manipulator! She is a child that tests the rules anyway and is just trying me more than usual. Oh well, the joys of motherhood right??!! Again, thanks everyone who responded, I appreciate it!

I would take her back to the doctor--it seems that her strep throat isn't gone. The gagging and vomiting is a sign of strep. My older son was getting it every other month till his tonsils were removed last January. The shot must not have been enough, she may need the oral antibiotic afterall.
Hope she feels better!

As was told to you in a previous post, strep throat does not usually last more then a week and that is with taking antibiotics, usually shorter with the shot cause that goes straight into your system and the pills or liquid takes time to ingest into your system. Now I want to tell you that it is a good thing that she wants to eat but if she is vomiting the worst thing you could give her is dairy products right now. If it has been a week, I beleive I would be calling back to the doctor and getting her in again and letting him know this cause chances are there is something else going on with her also. Usually you run a fever with an infection, especially when it is the throat. If you are not happy with what the doctor says after taking her back get a second opinion. Good luck and God Bless!

Hi! Your situation doesn't sound quite right. Usually strep has a fever (often a high, persistent one). While I agree with the other posts that the vomiting could be dehydration or dairy-induced I would take her back to the doctor. It is not uncommon for kids to not want to eat when they are sick, and post-nasal drip can add to nausea and gagging. Above all keep her hydrated - popsicles, gatorade (or something like it), Pedialyte, juice, broth, ginger ale; anything clear and noncafeinated.
Don't be afraid to bug the doctor if you are concerned; this is your child's health and you dedserve the best possible care. I hope she feels better soon!

Hi,

I have 4 children and they've all had it (except for baby, 2mo). It usually doesn't last more than a week. After about 3 to 5 days from the initial day they were feeling better.

We went through A LOT of soup! :)

Hope this helps,
M.

Hi A.,
I've had 2 children with throat problems. First of all if you are a smoker, try not to smoke around her, this can actually make her throat worse, even though I wasn't a smoker, the doctor told me that. Also milk products can cause phlem which can cause an inflamed throat to activate the gag reflex which can make them throw up. Try to give her clear gatorade for it has eletrolites in it and will help rehydrate her, being dehydrated can also make you feel like vomiting. also increase her potassium with bananas even if its baby food bananas, because potassium will also help her retain her electrolites and she'll not feel like vomiting. But the milk and yogurt can cause stomach distress, and make sure that you keep a log of how often she gets tonsilitis or strept throat, she may need her tonsils out. My daughter had hers out a year ago and hasnt been sick since. my Oldest son, who is 20, has had episodes of strept and tonsilitis his whole life and didnt want to get his tonsils out when he was younger and now he regrets it. Hope I've helped>>>

I would definitely take her back to the doctor to be checked. Also if her tummy is upset don't give her milk as it will make her tummy feel even more upset and more than likely cause vomiting. I would think that most dairy products would make an upset stomach more upset but I don't know.

Anyway, I would definitly take her back to the doctor her strep symptoms should already be gone and it sounds like you are dealing with something else at this point.

I don't know much about strep but for the vomiting you might ask for some zantac/ranitidine it's prescription only but worked very well for my 17 month old daughter who had vomiting and diarrhea for 5 weeks. The Dr. said she had vomited for so long the lining of her stomach was irritated. Your daughters throat is probably being irritated by the vomiting as well, making the strep thing even worse.
