Questions on a GOOD Vacuum for Children with Asthma and Allergies

My 3 year old (poor thing!) suffers from allergies and asthma, and in attempting to allergy-proof our home, I am wanting to get a new vacuum. So, there are so many on the market that claim to be hypoallergenic and whatnot. I would just like to know if any of you Moms out there have similar experiences. What vacuum would you suggest?

What can I do next?

It may not be the best vacuum for allergies, etc. but the Eureka Big Boss is the best vacuum I have had in years and it was only like $45. My kids have allergies but with the exception of my daughter, they are not allergic to pets. The vacuum does a good enough job that she doesn't have a problem being in the common areas of the house and of course, the dogs aren't allowed in her room.

One thing I would recommend you considering is not totally allergy-proofing your home. The whole point of allergy shots is to introduce allergens into the child's system in a controlled way so that they can build natural immunities to the things they are allergic to. I never had allergy shots as a child and my mother worked like a demon to have a dust-free home. We had dogs but they were limited to the kitchen and basement, both of which were tiled. Consequently when I was in a "normal" environment, my allergies often went beserk. I have as an adult, done everything wrong for allergies, from not remotely being dust free to having animals including cats, a major no-no. I am still deathly allergic to cats but I have far fewer problems with my allergies with dogs and dust than I did when things were totally dust free.

I think you have to try to balance between providing the easiest environment for your child but also making sure some allergens ARE in the environment. At school, on jobs, she won't be able to control the environment like she will at home but she will still need to function there. Maybe you keep her room squeaky clean, and preferably without carpet, while the rest of the home clean but not hospital sterile clean.

Hi K., I recommend visiting an Oreck store. There are several stores spread out around DFW. Oreck has great products and Xmas sales going on right now. I also have allergies, mainly from pollen in the spring and the fall. I own a carpet & tile cleaning biz and deep steam clean my carpet every 3 months. There are some good vacs out there but a deep steam clean 2 - 4 times per year is also recommended to remove the allergens. The carpet is like one BIG filter in your house...everything settles into the carpet and there it stays until it's removed! Call me (N.) if I can help at ###-###-####. My website is www.TheTurboTec.com. Take care!

Seebo & Miele make GREAT vacuums. Both brands are very expensive but I think worth it. I have the Seebo and I paid about $600 for it and have had it for over 6 years without ANY problems. It is hospital grade vacuum so it's great for allergies/asthma. My floors look great when I'm done with them and it's great on pet hair.I know there is a store in Southlake (Southlake Vacuum is the name I think) That sells both brands. My parents have the Miele and i think they are about the same quality.

Okay... I have two children with Asthma and lots of allergies. There on meds and cost me a fortune. The best vacuum I would recommend is A Kennmore vacuum. I don't remember the moel number, but it's at Sears and it's blue with the HEPA feature. It cost me about $89 and sucks up everything so please don't let your kids leave a shirt or sock lying around becasue it will get sucked in. It's also the first vacuum cleaner that I've been able to use around my children. I used to have to wait until they were out of the house or have gone to bed... but trust me this is a good cleaner. You don't have to worry about hidden dust in the air.
