Hello fellow cloth diapering mamas. I use bumgenius 3.0 diapers and wanted to know of who uses Bi O Kleen detergent what was the outcome. I specifically want to know did it take care of the stink of the pockets, did it cause any skin irritations on your baby, and do you prefer the powder or liquid. The liqid has fewer ingredients so I'm wondering does it affect the diapers differently. I currently am using country save and sun drying when possible to help. It is not enough. I use charlie's soap for my cloths, however it causes skin irritations on a small percentage of babies bums. So I'm trying to decide which detergent to try next on my diapers, charlie's soap or Bi O Kleen. Thanks in advance for your advice with your own expierences.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your input! For now I started putting a couple of drops of tea tree oil in the rinse cycle. I'm still sun drying when possible. So with that combo I'm OK. However I'm still interested in bio Kleen and have been washing it with my cloths to test for any irritations on me or the baby rubbing on my cloths. Bio Kleen has some natural oil extracts included, so I'm hoping that works so I don't have to spen more money on adding stuff to the wash(when using other products such as country save). I'm interested in soap nuts and sure I will be expierementing with those in the future. Thanks again for all the input and I still love my cloth diapers!!!

Hi A., I use the bum genius 3.0 and I use the liquid All Free and Clear I don't have any problems with smell at all and they always come completely clean. Also my son doesn't get irritation. He got a little diaper rash once but I just laid him out in the sun for about fifteen minutes without a diaper for a couple days and it worked like a charm, no need for creams or anything. Good luck

I used Country Save with my Fuzzi Bunz diapers and I had the same problem with lingering smell. I would put some vinegar in the wash, which helped, but someone told me that vinegar breaks down the elastic. So I started putting a few drops of tea tree oil in the wash. Tea tree oil is amazing to get rid of smells! It is expensive (about $7) for a little bottle (you can find it at Trader Joes or health food stores) but it lasts a loooong time because you only need a few drops - I've had my little bottle for about 3 years and I've barely used one-fourth of the bottle. Sorry I don't know anything about Bi O Kleen, but with the Country Save detergent and some tea tree oil, my little guys never had any skin irritations. Good luck!

I used cloth diapers when my sons were babies. We are an allergy prone family, so I had to be careful about everything. I used a final rinse of 1/4 cup of white vinegar to remove any residue and smell, then I dried them in the sun on a clothesline.

Although I am not cloth diapering...yet, I do have plenty of experience with Charlie's Soap as my husband and I used it for our personal laundry. I ended up with really bad allergy reactions on the top of my thighs and on the insides of my elbows (where the clothes fit tightest). It took weeks for it to clear up and I itched like crazy for that entire time. Although it seems to be a pretty clean soap (as far as chemicals go) it might be better to try a soap that has fewer plant chemicals. As far as getting out stink, I agree with the other poster that suggested tea tree oil. A little bit goes a long way and it has natural antiseptic properties.

I actually just emailed a friend about this issue. I was having pee stink issues with our bumGenius and called Jillian's Drawers website and got their advice. I started using Tide original powder and problem, solved! I don't even hang them in the sun usually. I normally just hang them on a doorknob near the washer to dry.

baking soda or washing soda with the soap..back in the day when I was still washing cloth diapers, I would pre-wash with a cup of white vineager & then do a cycle with dye & smell free laundry soap w/ a cup of washing soda.

I use soapnuts for all my laundry needs including our cloth diapers. I love that they are all natural, and I have never had any issues with irritation. I found mine online at Etsy (type in soapnuts in the handmade search), but I read in another post here that they are also available at Wholefoods.

If you are just trying to cure stink issues. Use a drop or two of tea tree oil in the wash.

We use soap nuts for our laundry including our cloth diapers. Our little ones haven't had any skin problems with soap nuts, but they also didn't when we used Charlie's soap. You can get soap nuts at Whole Foods or Amazon. We do a rinse/spin with white vinegar, then wash with soap nuts & line dry out in the sun. It works 95% of the time for us. When it's really bad, we will spray something first. We also use biodegradable liners when we know a poop is on the way so it contains most of it & is easier to clean. We have Swaddlebees & Mother's Touch pocket diapers so I'm not sure if that makes a difference-it shouldn't . Hope this helps!-M
