Hey mamas,

To make a long story short, about month ago, my then 5 month old nephew had a cancerous tumor removed in his right kidney. They have started chemo and have been doing it for two weeks now. The cancer was a stage three and now they are talking about going through radiation. They aren't sure if the cancer is still there, but for stage three they offer it.
Pros of radiation- could get rid of all the cancer. No guarantees.
Cons of radiation- could cause infertility, loss of growth in his torso, etc
Pros of no radiation- won't be deformed and no health issues due to radiation
Cons of no radiation- cancer could come back harshly later in life

Did any of you moms that had children with wilms tumor have the decision on radiation? If so, what happened?
All info would be much appreciated!!

Edit- the doctors and experts can't give advice or opinions, just facts.

Radiation can also only be done on same body part once per lifetime (ETA: depending on the type of radiation ~ check with the doctor). If he were to have radiation now, what kind of options will he have later? I would find that out. Is radiation 100% guarantee? I doubt it. I think you still have some unanswered questions that need to be addressed.
My hubby had radiation for a brain tumor. It was his last option. We still don't know if it "worked". I know it's not the same situation as your nephew, but I thought it might be helpful.
You and your family continue to be in my prayers!

Stephanie, my dad had radiation, including stereotactic radiosurgery three times for the same spot (brain tumor), so I think it may be able to be done more than once (best wishes for a full recovery for your hubby :-)). Difficult one Beth, but I would be gathering all my info from the experts. Good luck.

I would definitely get a second (and third!) opinion from some other top rated pediatric oncology facilities/doctors. The University of Texas MD Anderson Children's Cancer Hospital -- probably still ranks tops nationally (but I'm not up to date) . The City of Hope, and/or Children's Hospital Los Angeles are supposed to be excellent and still geographically close to you. I don't presume to know who would be best -- but certainly I would think the doctors should be able to give you advice as to the percentages/probabilities in a case like you nephews-- weighing the likelihood of the cancer returning, versus the side effects of radiation.

Our prayers are with you ...

Ugh. I would totally change his diet now. All organic for everything. Juicing. Supplements. No more vaccines. Check out sites like www.mercola.com and www.naturalnews.com

There are way more cons than you have listed but the scary part of what we have been brainwashed into believing doctors to know all is there. Quality of life has to be considered as well as what is in the future for him. IMHO and research, Chemo is good for certain kinds of blood cancers. For all others, what I mentioned above.

Prayers.

another con-radiation can have even more side effects later in life.

I have a suggestion, ask the dr if you do not do radiation now can be used if the cancer does return. can it be something in your back pocket for later? For instance, if you do radiation now, and the cancer comes back, can you do radiation again? wouldn't it be better to do a couple extra rounds of chemo. and hope it doesn't rtn...but, if it does, do radiation then? does that make sense?

The reason I suggest it, my son had a brain tumor, we chose a clinical trial, he did high dose chemo, and rec'vd stem cells...he went 5 yrs cancer free, when he relapsed he rec'd radiation. and that was 2 yrs ago. I know Wilm's is a whole different category...but, just a suggestion.

Radiation at his age usually doesn't change fertility as much as if he were older. so, there is a plus.

Good Luck. My sons dr.'s gave us plenty of advice and opinions....and they weren't always the same. I remember your post before-Is he at a Children's Hospital? I see you are in El Segundo-Mattel @ UCLA is great-so is CHLA. I don't know if they live local. Please, this is the 1st thing I tell newly diagnosed families-get treatment at a children's hospital. If you research success stories, statistically, you have better survivor rates from children's hospital's.
