My daughter's 1st grade class is going to have a "Rain Forest" party. Have been looking on the internet for ideas for different recipes. Some of the parents are going to make lunch food items for the children. Any clever ideas? This includes main dish, side dish dessert and beverage. Thank you very much. I appreciate the help.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your help. The party was a huge hit. Made menus for each child. We had some of the moms be waitresses and take the children's orders. Menu consisted of Caimen Eyeballs and Guts (pasta & meatballs), Flying Lizard on a stick (marinated chicken breast slices), Howler Monkey Brains (mashed sweet potatoes), Toucan Delight (mixed fruit), Fried Butterfly Wings (Terra Chips), Sloth Toes(carrots), Red Eyed Frog Eyes in pond scum (jello jigglers with craisins), Frozen Orchid Nectar (Sorbet), Leaf Cutter Ant Fungus Juice (Apple Juice) and Fresh Rain Forest Rain (Water)

The children entered the decorated room, sat down with their menus and were thrilled. The looks on their little faces was priceless. We had about 8 moms volunteer their time and they made it such a success! At the end, each child received their check and had to pay the cashier...the teacher.

Thank you for all of your help, ideas and suggestions. I hope that I can return the favor to you one day.

maybe do some tropical fruit (kiwi, pineapple, star fruit etc) and cut up veggies. maybe gut up some celery and put peanut butter on it with a few raisens (we called them ants on a log lol). or maybe do dirt dessert cups... (i would google this lol) but i think it has like chocolate pudding crushed oreos and gummie worms. i would look on google for chidrens party food.
heres the link for the dirt cups.. (i just googled and clicked on one haha)

What about frozen chocolate covered bananas for the treat? I'm not a big pusher of sweets, but there are always the inevitable treats and you might as well get it combined with fruit. =-) I have a vague recollection of seeing something like this at Trader Joe's, if nobody wants to dive in and make them.

If you really don't mind sugar, you could have a cookie decorating station. I say this because six year olds decorating cookies can end up as a lot of frosting. =-) Google "cookie cutters" and you'll find more jungle shapes than you know what to do with.

Try a google search for "jungle theme recipes." I did a quick one and saw lots of interesting ideas come up. Try this page: http://www.coolest-kid-birthday-parties.com/safari-theme-.... It had ideas for animal-striped pizzas, peanut butter & jellyphant sandwiches, cheese bugs, a "monkey meal" and swamp juice.

familyfun.com is full of great ideas.

Monkey bread comes to mind. It may be fun top have a fruit tasting of different tropical fruits kids don't normally eat:mango, papaya, star, kiwi, plantains.

How creative do you want to be? Vines comes to mind when I think rainforest. My idea is more work than I would do, but here it goes:

A trellis with cheap silk vine plants and various tropical fruits hanging (use pipe cleaners) in various places for the children to pick from the vine. So if it is too heavy, build it on a pull wagon and roll it into the school.

I don't know if it'd help, but I'd look up the menu for Rainforest Cafe. They might just have regular food, but with fun themed names that would work for your purpose. Have fun!

I believe there is a cereal called Rainforest Crunch at Trader Joe's. Don't know how it tastes. But my kids love to snack on dry cereal. Maybe it has a nice crunch and you can put small servings into dixie cups for little hands to grab and eat.

Good Luck!
