Raising Money for Fines

I sadly have found myself without insurance, driver's license and now cancelled registration. In order to be able to drive again (the only driver in the house), I need to raise roughly $1,000 for fines and insurance. In this economy, it may as well be a million. I have a husband and three teenagers depending on me (and now others) for rides to and from, so time is of the essence. Does anybody have any suggestions about how to raise money like this? Also, please don't suggest cash advance places. I'm once bitten twice shy on those places already. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi K., I assume you are talking about having to get an SR22. I'm an insurance agent and am familiar with this situation. Times are tough for a lot of us right now and insurance is usually something that gets cancelled when we run out of money! I know you have to pay everything thru the DMV but when you are done, make sure you get your insurance thru an independent agent like myself. We can shop around thru different companies to find you the best rate for the best coverage (as opposed to companies like American Family or State Farm). As far as actually raising money, I can't think of anything but am curious to see if anyone has any ideas, if so, maybe we all could do it! I know we have been cutting back on everything! Buying all the 10 for $10 groceries, called SRP and switched our plan from $340 mo to $197 (the same all year), dollar movies at RED BOX, etc. We are still stealing from Peter to pay Paul, but sometimes you just have to juggle things around. I wish I could help more. Please contact me if you need help further and best of luck to you!

In no particilar order....

- Any family you can ask?
- Any bonds you can cash in?
- Take a loan from your 401k - you have to pay it back, with interest. BUT, you're paying it back to yourself!
- Selling on craigslist. Don't bother with ebay right now. Things are selling for half what they normally would bring in
- Cash advance from your credit card? Read the fine print, there is usually a fee of 2-3% of the amount taken out. Some cap it, some don't. Some go a flat fee.
- Donate plasma/blood

I would go with the 401k loan if that is an option for you. At lest you pay yourself the interest.

So wait, there are 4 people in your family of age to drive, but you're the only one who does so? If you're having to drive them all around, I'd charge a small fee for it, or make them take the bus or walk. Maybe not the 14 year old as he has no option, but the others most certainly. I know it doesn't help the situation right now, but certainly consider it in the future.

Do you have anything that you can sell? Do you have a little bit of money to go to Goodwill and buy items half off and sell them for more on Craigslist?

We have had some tough times and we are finally getting through them, but there has been a lot of sacrificing and prioritizing on our part.

One day I had $20 to spend at Goodwill. Instead of buying stuff I didn't need, I found items that could be cleaned or that were new. I turned my $20 into $75-making a profit of $55. Not too bad for one day of work. We also turned to selling some of our larger furniture items that we can replace sometime down the road. We made $800 doing this. Good luck and you will be in my thoughts.

Not interested in how this came about, but I am interested in why you think this is entirely your responsibility to raise this money when you have a husband and 3 teenagers. Is anyone else helping out? Are your teenagers working or hold enough to get a job? Can your husband increase hours or get a second job? Anything in the house you can sell? Garage sale? Craig's list? Get the whole family involved and lighten your load a bit.
