Random Hives on Toddler

It seems like about 2 weeks or so, my 2 yr old son has randomly started breaking out in hives (or at least that is what they remind me of). They are usually on his face and sometimes cover most of it or sometimes there is just one or two. Other times they have appeared on his back. They look like small mosquito bites with red around them. It doesn't seem as if they itch and they usually go away within minutes. I just can't figure out what is causing this, it's just so wierd. Sometimes they appear while he is taking a bath, one time he had them covering his cheek when he and my daughter were bonking heads, he got a few after playing in the kids section at the library and another day at Chick-Fila and even a couple days after school. Since they have appeared on different parts and while we were in different places, I can't pin point what is causing them. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Wow! I think hives are usually an allergic reaction to something and I'm not a doctor but since he gets them so often the only way I think you can figure out what is causing them is if he gets tested at the doctor. My son got them once when he was a child and to this day I never figured out what caused them! We just gave him some Benadryl and they went away. And I don't want to scare you and I'm sure you know this but allergic reactions can be serious especially being that you don't know what he's allergic to...I would take him to the doctor as soon as possible. I know I wasn't much help lol....anyways, good luck!!!

start trying to keep a journal of everything he was around and ate when he breaks out in hives. When my son was a baby (under one) he would randomly break out in horrible looking hives all over his body. They were risen and looked like cow print shapes and covered his entire body. The doctors had no idea what caused it. They said probably an allergy but they don't test for that until the child is over 5. They never really bothered him, it was like he didn't notice. I came to the conclusion that he has extremely sensitive skin. When he got a hair cut he would break out, If he was outside playing in the grass he would break out. I think the hair or grass would poke him and cause him to break out but not 100% sure. He grew out of it. After a couple of months they went aways and haven't returned. You could try giving him oatmeal bathes or benedryl when the hives appear.

Chronic Urticaria (Hives) My husband and my children get them. In most cases hives are a sign of an allergic reaction and then for some it isn't. It can also be a symptom of Celiac Disease. We have had our children allergy tested and blood work done and I would recommend it. That way if there is an allergy that you are missing then you know it but then if it is nothing then you know not to worry about it.

My daughter was about 6 when she started getting weird hives. I took her to the doctor because I thought it was chicken pox at first. The first time she got them, she was COVERED. Head to toe. The pediatrician said to give her benedryl and I put a baking soda paste on her.
The next morning they were completely gone.
Then it happened a few weeks later and a few times after that.
Then, she just quit getting them.
She's never had them since.
I have no way of knowing what caused them and they quit being an issue anyway.

If it continues, you may need to have him tested for allergies.
Try to notice if it makes a difference what soap you use or if it happens when he's active or after a certain something he's eaten.
Keep a journal and see if you can notice a pattern.

Best wishes.

my now 5 yr old daughter had random hives around age 2 also - I was very puzzled and couldn't pin point it until one day big sister came home from school with some valentine's treats. my 2 yr old unwrapped a Reese's peanut butter cup, took one bite and ran to me in the kitchen, coughing, red face, panicking and trying to wipe it off her tongue. We went to a pediatric allergist and sure enough she's allergic to peanut, cats, dogs, dust mites, and outdoor mold.
We also have a cat and two dogs...
The hives she was experiencing at age 2 could have come from dog or cat saliva, peanut residue from foods made on equipment with peanuts, peanut oil at restaurants (Chick-fil-A uses peanut oil), any number of things.
Keep a journal of what or where you have eaten when you see the hives, if you're around certain animals....maybe you will find a pattern.
I would suggest seeing an allergist to have him tested. The skin prick test is fairly simple and easy even for a 2 yr old. You just have to keep them occupied for about 15 min so they don't scratch their back during the test.

Could it be something he's eating or drinking or his bath soap? It just may come on at any point in the day. I went through this with my son after taking amoxicillin. We thought it was other things until he had it again.

My 2 year old broke out in hives a few days ago which resulted in a visit to our nearest urgicare. It was so severe her entire body was covered. As you know 2 year olds can put almost anything in their mouth. My older daughter told me my 2 year old dtr found a 1/2 eaten reeses peanut butter cup and ate it. My suggestion is to go to a pediatric allergist to get your son tested. The MD at urgicare told me to get over the counter benedryl for children. The hives went away after about 40 minutes.
