Rash Keeps Coming Back While Sleeping

My 15 month old gbaby had raw apple two days ago for the first time and after she woke from nap had splotchy bumpy rash all over face, forehead, behind ears (those looked like hives) and above her collar. I used an allergy ceam and hydrocortisone and it went away almost immediately... but since then every time she naps or sleeps the rash comes back, disappearing again after about 30 minutes. I've washed all her bedding and cleaned around her crib. Does anyone know if this is normal or if something else may be going on?

What can I do next?

sorry I'm late replying. I wondered if she has recently had her 15month shots? MMR can cause a full body rash reaction a week or so after the immunization. 2 of my daughters had a wild rash at this stage of their lives and it was determined to be the shot reaction (that 1/6 kids get they tell me but both my girls got!). Hope it has cleared up!!!

What are you washing her bedding with? Make sure it's a free and clear detergent, and no fabric softener or dryer sheets.

I Agree with Heidi M. Below.. I too suffered from hives and at night, they got so much worse....... apart from the heat of the covers, which will agitate the possible hives, so will detergents and or tight clothing. Try COTTON pajamas that are loose. This way the skin can breathe.. Also, a warm bath definitely bring on the hives... not to mention if you use a bubble bath..
Hives can go in cycles... and rage from a week to months.. depending upon what's bringing them about. I also recommend drinking lots of water to help the system continually cleanse itself (and the liver) where toxins can build up and make hives even more reactive..

good luck

Well it is not the apple. Does she wake up in the morning with the rash or only naps. If not what does she take in crib when she naps. Sometimes you just never can figure it out and eventually it goes away. If it is not bothering her and goes away I would not worry about it.

Ask the pediatrician if you are able to give her some Benadryl.
Since they come and go, you could ask about if she needs to be seen or not.

If it is a food reaction, those sometimes take 4 -5 days to get through the system. Just keep treating the hives when you see them.

heat rash? When I was a kid I frequently got a heat rash in places that got sweaty and hot - the back of my neck (under my long hair), inside of my elbows and knees, etc. Maybe she's getting warm & sweaty while napping?

Also consider eczema - it's a result of food allergies usually. It can be dairy; acidic foods like oranges & tomatoes; strawberries.

If it goes away after she's awake for a while i'm betting on the heat rash - maybe put less clothes on her while she sleeps.

My first thought: Slight allergy to detergents/softeners. Use a totally allergen-free ("free and clear" or "hypoallergenic") detergent -- with no colors; no scents at all; etc. Switch right away and wash things in it a couple of times before you put them on the bed. If she uses a mattress cover, wash that in the new detergent as well. Same applies to whatever she's wearing to sleep -- rewash a few times in the dye-free, scent-free, allergen-free detergent.

Does she use a pillow? Drop that -- it might be the pillow or its filling or the pillowcase that is giving her a contact allergy. She's kind of young for a pillow anyway. Eliminate it and see if it helps. The fact that the rash is on the face and neck might point to the pillow as a culprit.

If you're thinking, "She has slept on the same sheets/pillow for a while and hasn't had any reactions" -- be aware that allergies can appear at different times, and someone who has had no reactions previously can suddenly start having reactions at any time.

You said the rash came after her first time eating raw apple -- good catch on your part. It could be a food allergy (and yes, one can be allergic to apples; my friend is horribly allergic to them). If she has had no further apples, I'm not sure about it, but ask the doctor. Has she had any other new foods recently?

Heat rash could be another issue but I would expect that on the body and not on the face.

And do ask the doctor's office. Does your pediatrician have a "nurses' advice line" where you can call and just ask a question rather than taking her in for an appointment? I'd start with a call but if they want to see her, do go, and ask to schedule it right after her nap time so they can see the rash before it fades.

It sounds like heat rash. She may need to wear lighter clothing when she goes to sleep or don't use that much cover on her. I checked on my dd the other night when it was 60 degrees. She had on a long sleeved night gown and she was wrapped around the sheet and the comforter. She was covered in sweat from head to toe. I just used the sheet to cover her. Hope she feels better soon.

Well i can speak from experiance. My oldest daughter just over a month ago now started to break out and we had no clue what it was. Took her to doctor and they all had different results. So untill my youngest daughter said she saw bugs on her bed, we had it checked out and come to find out we had bed bugs. But I am not saying that's what your little one may have but it would be good to get it checked. I did not want to believe we had them till I saw them crawling on my bed. I FREAKED out and
yes I meant for that to be in caps, it was bad we got it taken care of and now she is not breaking out anymore. We still have no clue how we got them but they are finally gone.

The heat probably is bringing it out. It has not fully went away. I know when my son had hives really bad heat made them worst. Just make her comfortable. If it keeps happening I sugest having her get checked out.

Thanks everyone. I never considered heat rash because I'm in Wisconsin! We keep indoor temp pretty low as well and she sleeps in light weight clothing, but she does cover her WHOLE body and head in her blankets. :o). No pillow and yes, same deterent as always, but I will try rewashing with Dreft Free. I appreciate all the advise!

I found out from a nurse I know (I sent her pictures) that it's a generica viral rash. As long as she seems normal otherwise I am to let it run it's course. Thanks again everyone.
