I am looking for some books to suggest to my 15 year old sister to read. She claims she hates reading, but she has never really tried reading a book for fun. I really want to find books that will interest her to show her how reading is a good way to pass the time and that you don't always need a computer or a telephone to be entertained.

My daughter like the Click books. She's younger but the books are geared toward older kids. She also like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and all of the Harry Potter books. Hope this helped.
Hi, N.. I teach 8th grade language arts, and I see kids carrying around all kinds of books at this age. Many of the girls in my classes like Margaret Peterson Haddix books--she has a series called The Shadow Children. Another popular author is Laurie Halse Anderson--she wrote Speak, Catalyst, and others. Your sister may like Scott Westerfield's series that includes Pretties, Uglies, and Specials. Lisi Harrison writes a series called the Clique Series--this one is hit-and-miss with my 8th graders. Carolyn B. Cooney writes a lot of books about a wide variety of teen issues that might be interesting to your sister. Lurlene McDaniel's books all deal with love and loss--mostly a dying boyfriend and the girl's struggle to overcome the loss. If your sister is into sports, she might try books by Carl Deuker, Chris Crutcher, or Mike Lupica. John Feinstein has some great adolescent lit out right now, too.

This may be too obvious, but what about the Harry Potter books. If you think she is too old, I'm 41 and I am dying to read the new one.
When I was about that age I went throught the same thing and I had the typical 15 year old attitude. My mom got me the book "A Child Called IT" by David J Pelzer, It changed my life!! I honestly made me think about how I treated people and what I wanted my life to be like. All teenagers think that they have it so rough and after they read this book they will have an entirely different out look on life. Dave has I think 3 books with this series. I really think that this is a book that everyone should read!!
I have the same problem. My daughter will read like sweet 16 magazines. She loves them or any magazines that include some reading about singers that she likes. I have also taken her to the public library and had her pick out her own book and she could not use the computer, tv, and friends untill she has read at least 2 chapters of the book and explained to me what is happening. She was mad at me for making her do it but she needs to read.

It all depends on her interests, but I absolutely love the shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella. She also has 2 other book that aren't part of the series but are awesome as well. They are funny and easy to read. I think I started to read them when I 17 or 18, so you might want to check them out to make sure they are appropriate. There might be some swearing, but I don't remember. You know her interests, so you could go to a bookstore and ask them what they would suggest. I find the employees to be incredibly knowledgeable, so they would surely find something. Good Luck!
find out what she likes what she is talking about on the phone or what she is looking up on line. that way you can find a book in that subject. now i have a sister who is 15 and she reads romance books and fact books and things on her bands like magasines and things like that.
I agree that Harry Potter is a great choice, also the Aragon series are wonderful. There are only 2 out at this time, and a third coming out soon. The first Aragon book has been made into a movie, so I would challenge her to read the book first and then compare it to the movie. Watch it together, if its possible, it is a great movie! The Nancy Drew books are another great teen books. My sister loved them. Plus there is a movie out now on that series. The Lord of the Rings books are great books too, unless she isnt into Sci Fi. lol Then I probably have nothing good for you. I know our local libraries here in Sioux Falls have teen reading programs going on right now, so I would check out the libraries where you are (I didnt check first, sorry) and see if there are any and what is involved. I know here they get prizes for reading so many books, but also have challenges on what books to read. Check around and see if there is a teen book club. Good Luck!
Harry Potter Series, Princess Diaries Series, The Outsiders. Romeo & Juliet, the translated version. I just asked her what she likes to read. Anything by the author Meg Cabot is fun to read even though they may seem to be for younger girls. She doesn't read alot either but she likes these.
My 14-yr. old niece loves the classics. She's recently been devouring lots of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte. If that's not your sister's style, maybe she would like a modern re-telling (like "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" or "Jane" by April Linder).
And at the risk of sounding completely self-serving, I've been told that my fiction books are well-received by teenage girls (Some of the themes are "adult," but I try to keep things PG-13).
James Patterson has a series out for young readers called Maximum Ride. They are awesome! I have read pretty much all of his books and he is one of my fav authors. His books are pretty much geared for adults, EXCEPT his Maximum Ride series. He wanted to write something that would get kids interested in reading and he did awesome! The books (in order) are: Maximum Ride - The Angel Experiment, Maximum Ride - School's Out Forever and the newest is Maximum Ride - Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports.
Of course the Harry Potter series are great! I too am waiting some what patiently for the newest. I read the last one in only 3 days!
Also, another good teen series (I think anyway) is a series called Left Behind: The Kids. I have read the whole Left Behind series written for adults, but I also found out that there is a series written for teens as well. I bought the first couple for my son and he has a hard time getting into books, but he enjoyed the first one. I will say that he had a hard time with it, because it does jump around. It has like 4 main characters or so, so quite a bit in the first book it jumps around to each of them and their lives before they end up togther later on. So he didn't like the jumping around, but he did like the story.
