Real Life "False Positive"?

I have to start out by saying that I love having babies. Nothing makes me happier. DS#1 is 4, DS#2 is 2, and DS#3 is 8 mos. old. A couple months ago I started noticing my milk production lessening and my hormones swinging a little, so I felt obligated to warn DH. Then I got my period in April and warned him again, "OK, now conception is a real possibility!" A couple weeks later, "OK, now this is going to be a really fertile week..." Hahaha, he was in denial. So a week and a half ago I started taking pregnancy tests.

Sunday morning it finally came back positive. No "Is that possibly a line?"...it was an honest-to-goodness, no doubt about it, this is a positive result pink line. I was so happy, and told everyone at church. Wednesday night I felt compelled to take one more, just because I wanted to see the line appear faster (I'm obsessed). But it never appeared. Thursday morning I took another one, and still no positive result. And I took another one a couple hours ago. Still nothing. No bleeding, either, just barely-there cramping.

I don't know what to think. I had gone in to the hospital on Monday to get a blood test done, and I'm waiting anxiously for the lady to call me back to tell me what the result was. She gave me her cell number and of course I can't find it now.

Has anyone ever gotten a false positive on a pregnancy test (without being on hormone treatment drugs)?

What can I do next?

Yes. I'm in the 1% who had a false reading on a HPT and it was a positive. In fact, it was on a digital pregnancy test that read "Positive," so there was no chance I misread. I only learned the truth when I went to the ER with what I thought was a miscarriage only to embarrassingly learn it was my period. The doctor there said, "Well, someone has to be in that 1 percent." Ugh, it was me.

It's rare, but it happens. You did the right thing to get a blood test. I don't trust HPTs at all now.

I got pregnant shortly after starting to wean my son, but had a miscarriage around week five. I discovered that this is fairly common for breastfeeding mammas. If your test was positive at first and then negative, it is more likely a sign of an early miscarriage, otherwise known as a chemical pregnancy.

From what I can tell, breastfeeding mammas are susceptible to this occurrence because they have higher levels of prolactin, which inhibits the production of progesterone - a vital hormone throughout pregnancy.

What can you do? I now take Vitex (chaste berry) to help restore my hormonal balance. Mothering.com has some great info on Vitex from moms who have used it. Thus far, it has not affected my milk supply - although since I am in the process of weaning, I wouldn't mind if it did. I am also considering using supplemental progesterone if I get pregnant again to help prevent another miscarriage.

Yes. I got a false positive from a cyst on my ovary. Ovarian cysts are very common... If you read the literature in the OTC pregnancy test, it does say that ovarian cyst will interfere with the accuracy of the test. The cyst creates a chemical that the test misinterprets.

If your blood test comes back negative, then ask your OB/GYN to see if you have a cyst. Mine grew quite large (and painful) and had to be removed.

Its possible that on Sunday/Monday you were pregnant, and by Wednesday you weren't.

I would call you OB. Especially if the results from Monday's test are positive.

No, I've never heard of that, ever. Really strange. I guess it's possible to get pregnant, then something changes so that it's no longer a viable pregnancy...and your hcg dips off the radar. Keep us posted, I really hope your next test is positive!!!

And why is it taking them so long to read a blood pregnancy test??? They have the results immediately, call them now!

Did I read this wrong or do you think you cannot get pregnant when you are nursing?

When one of my children were 8 months old, I had a false positive blood test. My doctor said it was probably because I had a 2 year old and an 8 month old and my hormones were imbalanced from having back to back pregnancies and breastfeeding. I'm now 40 years old and just had my 5th baby and my then 2 year old and 8 month old are now 16 and 17! =D Good luck!!

With my third pregnancy, I got a very very faint positive, followed a few days later by a negative test, which stayed negative for a couple of weeks. I assumed that I miscarried, but then, with no bleeding in between, about 3-4 weeks later, I got a very strong positive. (I have a rather long cycle -- 5-6 weeks usually). My midwife thinks that the first positive was actually an "evaporation line" rather than an actual positive, which is why it went away and I never bled before the real positive. The baby, based on it's development and when it was born, was definitely conceived around the time I started getting consistent positive tests.

I think it's more likely that you were (or are) pregnant and miscarried. Or, you're pregnant and the spike of hormones went down, though, that would be weird too. Anyway, a positive means they detect the pregnancy hormone. I think it's most likely that you were (hopefully ARE) pregnant (assuming you want to be!).

I've also had the same thing happen. You have three blessings (I know you are already aware of that lol) and I'm sure the fourth one will be in your tummy soon.
