Hello, So my husband has left me to get a new tire for our 06 jetta and get the oil change. I hate doing this because I believe I get taking advantage of with the cost. Since I do not know squat about cars im useless. Do any of you other ladies feel this way?? Also, where are reasonable places to get tires and other car maintenance done at.

Thanks!
F.

I hate to admit it, but I actually always ask my dad to make the calls for me when I need something done with my car or else I ask him exactly what to say so that when I call I can at least fake some car knowledge! If I don't, I always get that , "Well little lady" garbage that just drives me nuts! From this I have actually learned a few things about cars...
When it comes to an oil change, just ask for the basic. Tell them to change the oil and whatever the house oil is will be fine. Don't let them talk you into a fully synthetic oil unless you want to commit to that for the life of your car. Ones you go full synthetic you can't switch back, and it is VERY expensive!
Ask them to check the fluids and top off anything that needs it. If they come out and tell you that your air filter needs changed, ask to see it. If they say your belt has cracks, don't get it changed yet and ask your husband to look at it. That is a common one they try to get us on!
As for the tire, they have basic features as far as how many miles they are guaranteed for, and you can choose if you want white lettering or not. Go for something reasonably priced with a good warranty and you should be fine. Get an all weather that suits where you live.
Hang in there! It won't be as bad as you think!

I've always had good luck with discount tires, they even fix your flat for free (if fixable). There was one time I needed a tire replaced and they sold me a used one but it was practically new for $30.00. They also have a warranty ($10.00 per tire) that includes flat repairs and minimum replacement cost if not repairable.

I usually buy my tires at either Costco or NTB.

As far as oil changes, I do them myself.
But I do advise you to stay away from Jiffy Lube. The one time I did go to a place to have my oil changed, they tried to scare me into you need this, you need this, etc. Only problem is the filters they showed me that was extremely dirty, were not from my from my car. I know this because I work on my own car, I know what my filters look like.

Everyone I know that has gone to them, has said nothing but negative things.

I personally would find a locally owned place in your town that does oil changes but still does a look over on your car. But you should never feel pressured to get anything extra done.

Also go with what the manufacturer of your car recommends, you can void your warranty if you don't. They will be able to pull it up on their computer what is recommended.

You could try Sears. I've heard good things about honesty about them here in Pittsburgh, anyway.

Hey,
My husband works for Discount Tire, and they're a great company that actually has integrety. I know the feeling of the "you're a lady so you can't know anything about cars..." but I've never felt that at Discount. I'd try taking your car to one of their stores - they're also called America's Tire (I'm not sure what it is where you are), but they're great.

We have always had good service at Discount Tire. I am very picky about my car and they respect that.

As for my new tires, mine were about $1300 for everything BUT (Michelin Pilot, or somthing like that) , I drive a sport Mercedes and the front tires and back tires are different sizes. They wear out faster because you cannot rotate them either.

When we had my soccer mom van, they gave us about $200 refund because we had to replace a couple of tires before the warranty was out. Hubby also got a free tire once due to the warranty.

Discount Tire stands by the products they sell. As for oil changes.... I go to my dealer. My dealer has done everything excpet the tires on my car. I like for the dealer to have all records so they know who touched what and why.

Good luck
