Recommendations for OB GYN in Grand Rapids

I am looking for recommendations for a OB GYN in Grand Rapids. I would prefer a practice that does not have so many doctors involved, which I realize may be hard to find, as I hate having to meet with each one in case they are on-call when you go into labor. I would prefer a female, but am open to a male. The main concern I have is one who will listen and is available. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Hi K.,

I hear you on wanting a female, but a few years ago a friend who is also a PA recommended Dr Steven Dalm. She did one of her rotations with him.
I absolutely love him!!! He is the most caring doctor I've ever had and he made my delivery with my son so wonderful!!! He was extremely patient and caring with my every need. He is the only doctor in his office. The office phone is ###-###-####. He is located at 28th st and Breton. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Hi K. -
Congrats on your pregnancy!
I strongly and whole-heartedly endorse Dr. Joseph Talcott. He cared for us through three pregnancies and continues to be my primary. He is knowledgable and attentive, but also very funny and laid back. He is also a Dad (has a large family) and an active community member - coach, church, etc. My last pregnancy was very complicated, but he and his staff caught the problem very early on and were able to get the extra help we needed. I have read that a lot of defects are missed or overlooked on ultrasound, but they are all very well trained, experienced and attentive. Dr. Talcott used to be partners with Dr. Dalm, but now has his own practice on 44th St. close to the new Metro Health Hospital. Call the office and set up an informal meeting or stop by and talk to the staff, I think you'll be impressed.

His office is located at
1505 44th St. SW in Wyoming.
The office number is ###-###-####.

Good luck to you and your family!!

Hi Kim~

Depending on the area you are looking in over in East GR is Dr Stephen Dalm, he is wonderful and you only see him. He was my ob for years. He has his own office on Plymouth/Hall. On the Weside(we moved so I switched doctors)of town Dr Cynthia Schuler. She is considered family practitionor vs the obgyn but she does it all. My whole family sees her and I saw her through both my pregnancies. Again you only see her rather than whom ever is available in the practice.

Good Luck,
M.

I'm not sure which hospital you are hoping to deliver at, but I went to Advantage Health doctors and delivered at St. Mary's. I was a high risk pregnancy with twins and LOVED all five of my OB/GYN's! They were recommended to me since I'm not from around here and I've passed on the word to others. I actually had Dr. Geron Turke as my GYN and part of my pregnancy, but ended up having Dr. Kirstin Anderson deliver my babies. Two of the other doctors are female, Dr. Zylstra and Dr. Bennett, and they are wonderful also. Dr. Gorsuch is also in the practice and is great, but if you want a female, HE would not be what you are looking for! =)

All of the St. Mary's staff was fabulous and very comforting as I went through a tough time. I wasn't able to be with my babies for a while since they were preemies and required extra attention in the NICU. Everyone was willing to take me down to visit them and do what they needed to help me out. If your child needed to go to the NICU for some reason, I have nothing but great things to say about the nurses there! It takes a special person to work in there and they were AMAZING!!! Best of luck to you!

I had an emergency c-section with my first daughter and was being seen by my family doc during that pregnancy. The doctor on call that did my c-section that day was Dr. Constance Leahy of Advantage Health at 309 Jefferson SE, ###-###-####. They have 3 different women and 2 men that I have seen. I never wanted to see all of them either because I absolutely loved Connie, but they are all gentle and take time explaining things. I have loved it there and switched to that practice for my other 2 children. Parking is not a problem downtown either as they have their own lot!

Good luck!
C.

Have you considered a family practice doc? I go to West Michigan Family Med. Your doc is your ONLY doc- no rotating through everyone. Our doc is our ped for our 2 kids, she delivered both of them, and my husband goes to her as well.

I haven't "technically" had this doctor, but for my last pregnancy it seemed like my actual doctor was always on vacation, so this doctor was on call for her (which I ended up needing a lot!). It was Dr. Joseph Talcott...I know this is a man, but he really is great. I've always felt more comfortable with women too, until him. Not only was he the one who came to the hospital to see me during my stays at 12 weeks and 8 months, he was also the one who came to check on me after the birth (at 9 months) for the next three days. He wasn't even in the same practice as my actual doctor!

Hi K., congrats on your second child! I STRONGLY recommend Dr. Melinda Johnson of West Michigan OBGYN right across from Spectrum Hospital. Their website is www.westmichiganobstetrics.com I had not gone to West Michigan OBGYN until I was pregnant because I wanted to find great doctors, and I did! Dr. Johnson has children of her own and is kind, caring, never in a rush, and I only had a different doctor when she was on maternity leave when she had her twins. She stayed late after her shift at work and delivered my daughter who is now almost four. I never had to meet with the other doctors and the atmosphere in the office was laid back and professional. My favorite story about Dr. Johnson was when I went in to find out the sex of my baby...and she refused to move and show! Dr. Johnson knew how upset I was, so when she came back from her maternity leave, she snuck me into the ultrasound room and we found out...a girl! (my insurance at the time would only cover one ultrasound unless it was for additional medical concern). Anyway, good luck and as much as I love Dr. Johnson, I would recommend anyone from that office. A bonus, it's right across from Spectrum, where I had a very positive birthing experience.

I did meet a couple other doctors just in case, but she ended up delivery my baby girl, she is sooo nice and takes time to explain everything to you, I always feel very comfortable with her and never "afraid" to ask her anything no matter how weird the question may be :-)

I went to Dr. Sharla Ulstad at Southeast OB/GYN in the big brick Spectrum medical building on East Paris. Her whole practice will be moving downtown to the new Women's Health Center. There are 5 docs in the practice (3 female, 2 male). I didn't end up meeting the others because I had to have a C-section. But she is very sweet and friendly, she's a young mother herself, and she really listens to any questions or concerns you have. In fact, she would start the visits by asking if I had any questions, before she got into the "business" of the visit. I really appreciated that, because if a doc waits to ask that question until the end of an appt, I would feel like it was an afterthought, or that they were trying to wrap things up and get out of there.

Hi Kim,

My doctor is in with a lot of other doctors, however I have had two children and only saw a different doctor once. This is actually a great situation seeing how I had to see her 3 times a week for my first daughter for 3 months. (tough pregnacy) I would recommend her to anyone. I absolutely love her. You never feel rushed and she listens. Here is her information.

I would have to agree with Rosemary and suggest any doctor in the office at West Michigan OBGYN. I work in the health field and have had to deal with almost every single doctor on a professional level and they are all excellent. I personnally go to Dr. Jeffrey Dood and I love him. Because of the great number of doctors, you don't actually meet each doctor. If you deliver during office hours, your doctor will walk over to the hospital and deliver. If it is at night or on the weekend, the doctor on call will deliver. This didn't bother me because during labor, the nurses did most of the work anyway. Actually, both of my sons were delivered by the doc on call (Dr. Rohn) and I had no problem with it. Dr. Dood came to check on me at the end of his shift when I was in labor and the morning after delivery. It's truly a GREAT office!
