Recommendations: Hairstylist for Teenage Son

My oldest son is 14.5 years old and six feet tall. I say that because I can't understand why every single hairstylist we visit cuts his hair in a traditional very short "little" boy cut despite our efforts to the contrary. He likes to wear his hair in a somewhat traditional cut but longer (Zac Efron...). Last week we went to a new hairstylist. She assured us she understood that we wanted the length left especially in the bangs - that all we wanted was the back and ears trimmed. He's really upset this time especially because he's got two colics up front that don't want to stay down when his bangs are short. Not to mention she used thinning scissors so he actually has a section of bangs completely missing.

So Moms does anyone have a stylist who they'd recommend for this type of haircut? Someone who will listen and not cut it even if the usual cut is shorter? We'll need someone to correct the cut sometime the end of next month.

Thank you!
J.

I have 4 boys 18 and down.
The 18 year old wore his hair long for awhile.
We have never had a problem at SPORT Clips.

Don't know where you live, but have you tried a barber shop instead of a salon? Guys cutting guys hair. That might work better. There is a good one in Huntley. A young guy that has his own shop so you might have better luck there.

My husband likes his hair short like military style, but he has a serious knot in the back of the head that you have to watch out for. He always does it right around the knot and cuts it so the hair fades short from the bottom to a little longer on the top with no choppiness.

My hubby tried a Great Clips recently to save some money and the girl cut it pretty choppy. It looks kinda silly.

I have had a lot of luck with Salon Coccole in Lake Zurich. Gina listens and understands hair. There are always a lot of men in there when I get my hair cut. She will also admit if there is someone else in the salon that could do it better than she can...rare in a hair stylist!

I am not sure where you live, but Paul Hyland Salon in Crystal Lake has a lot of younger stylists who do what you want and know what the style is. One stylist you could ask for is Ashley.

I would suggest Maggie at Chrysalis in downtown Arlington Heights. She does my hair exactly the way I want it, even when she thinks something else would look better. She works on all ages, male and female.

Make sure that the if the cut is not what you explained to the stylist that the owner/manager knows about it. Next go to a salon that has levels of trained people like Mario Tricoci and for the first cut get a "master" stylist. If the cut is liked then take a picture at the time when the hair is at the length that is liked. Then you should be able to go to almost any stylist and have them repeat it. The first time have him find pictures on the internet of what he likes, a few and take them with. That way if the cut turns out to be not what he wanted talk to management show pictures. Either they didn't listen or the the cut that he is looking for won't work for his hair type.

Appearances in Hoffman Estates on Golf Road is excellent. They are owned and operated by a family and are now second or third generation stylists. My youngest son allowed me to take him there when he was a teenager and didn't trust anyone to touch his hair and now he won't go anywhere else. He's been going there now for 8 years. I recommend Joe or Carlo.

Depending on where you live, you can visit Cindee's Hair & Nail Pizzazz in Roselle, off of Lake Street, just east of Gary Ave. They have great stylist's over there. I see guys in there all the time. I have naturally curly hair and I see Michelle while I'm there.
I think a haircut is about $30.
good luck. :)

I finally found someone that I love - she works at Frank Giranda (or Frank Gironda?) in Naperville and her name is Angelina. She's considered 'young talent,' so you don't pay out the bum for your haircut (I think mine cost $28), but she's good. Really good. She's young, maybe 22 or so, so she will probably be on the same page as your son as far as communicating what he wants. And she listens to what you want - she'll make sure to let you know what she thinks/suggests, but she followed exactly what I requested. You should be able to just google the location. Best of luck!
