Hi girls,
I'm looking for an infant life jacket for my 15 month old boy who weighs about 24lbs. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations on brands or style of jacket which is not only safety approved for his size, but also comfortable enough that he will wear it without huge complaints!! This is for use on a boat. Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

Hi C.. We used the LL Bean Discovery brand last summer on my 2 year old who was about 26lbs at the time. She didn't complain a bit, and I felt safe with her on the boat and in the water. Actually, she even napped on the boat and used the back cushion as a pillow! Have fun!

I am not sure if you knew this or not, but there is a Missouri law that states "Children under 7 years of age must wear a USCG—approved PFD at all times while on board any vessel, unless the child is confined in a totally enclosed area of the vessel such as the cabin area of a houseboat or day-cruiser."
I have a 9month old daughter and have been going to the lake all my life. I don't have a brand to recommend to you on jackets, since she has not used hers yet, but she has a Stearns, which is made for children under 50lbs. A friend borrowed it last year for their 14 month old and he wore it with NO complaints! He was just thrilled to wear it down to the docks! Just make sure it is a USC (U. S. Coast Guard) approved Jacket. I will say though I complained as a baby/small child about wearing a jacket Please let me know if you find a coast guard approved jacket that is comfortable as well. I will have to wait until memorial day to see how my daughter does with hers! Good luck!

Hi C.~
This may sound weird, but I don't plan on buying a life jacket for my son (22 mo) for a long time. Life jackets can actually CAUSE drowning b/c of the way they are made.
We started Infant Swimming Resource lessons with him at 17 mos. Most kids can start at 6 mo old.
Our instructor is Chuck Teasley in the STL area. You can check out infantswim.com for more information.

We used life jackets when we took the kids on the boat. In my experience, none of them are really comfortable. Their torso is so short, that no matter what you do, they push up on their chins when they sit. We have always instilled the ruled that they aren't allowed near the wated w/out a jacket. They may be uncomfortable, but they are a requirement. Things are made better now, than when my kids were little, so maybe you'll find something better!
