I have had to get my Oreck serviced several times since buying it. It gets clogged constantly and smells like it is on fire. We have the cheap model... who knows, maybe that's why it's terrible. However, I will NEVER buy an Oreck again.
I have a well researched top of the line Hoover Wind tunnel supreme self propelled. I have no pets but lots of crumbis and dirty feet- kids.( 6 in home day care)
My vacuum is only 1 year old and has been in the shop twice in a year and now it barely working. I read tons of research and it was the best from consumer reports and eopinions. I must have gotten a bad egg. Anyways I am not interested in a Hoover again. I need one with a bag. A good one. It can be upright or other kind.

I'm not sure if the Meile vacuums are as good as the Kirby's but...I have used Meile for years. We are allergic, have kids and a dog. Meile is recommended for people with allergies and it works great. Check them out.

we just got the Bissell Velocity at Target.
a bit premature for me to cast any real reviews, but it does a great job of picking up dirt even on bare floors that my other vacuums didn't. With 3 cats, 1 dog, a husband, and an active toddler, I was quite pleased with this. Check on epinions for yourself.
I am also a family childcare provider, in Streamwood.(Also a former teacher, in fcc since my kids were little, one is now in college) Like you, I was going through an expensive vacuum at the rate of one every year or two. This last winter, I bit the bullet and bought a Kirby. It was more than I ever paid for a vacuum, ($1,000, demo model), but came with a shampooer and a ton of other attachments and an excellent warranty. I haven't owned it that long, but thus far, I am very happy with it. Kirby has a website if you want to check it out, and as part of their demonstration for me, they cleaned my carpets, a nice bonus.
we went with the kirby and love it. It is expensive, but worth the cost if you use it a lot. It came with tons of attachments and a shampooer. They will come and demonstrate in your home for you.
###-###-####, they are in Morton Grove

hey why don't you just put a lot of tape on those kids shoes and make them pick up their own mess? har Again, the oreck works great, though we have a bissel bagless and it's awesome.
I really like Oreck. It's held up really well, it's lightweight, and gets used almost everyday for the last three years. I've had it serviced and the people at the store are really nice and helpful.
One Word-- DYSON
I'll never use another Vacuum cleaner again.

I currently have an Oreck and love it. I've had it for over two years. Orecks come with two free cleanings a year, to help ensure that it always works properly. I've never had a problem with it. I have two cats (one is long-haired) and a 6 yr old - both my son and I are allergic to our cats so it's important that we have a vacuum that really gets the cat hair up. When you buy an oreck, you also get a smaller vac for small places, and your choice of one of several other small appliances - when I bought my vacuum I chose the Oreck Mixer - and I love it as much as I love my vacuum. The vacuum itself is lightweight, and fairly compact - so it can be stashed away even in a small space. My 56 yr old mom who has seven dogs, five cats, a bird, a husband and a messy teenage son swears by the Oreck. My 34 yr old sister with 4 cats and 2 dogs also swears by the Oreck. http://www.oreck.com
I used a Kirby vacuum for a few years before the Oreck. It's also a good vacuum, but very heavy - and has several attachments that you have to stop and change depending on what type of floor you are vacuuming. This was my least favorite vacuum out of all of the vacuums I've ever used or owned. The Kirby is self-propelled and does have a powerful motor. the upholstery attachment has it's own motor and is great for cleaning furniture. The weight of the vacuum was a big issue for me - because carrying it up and down stairs everyday was a bit of a challenge. It has been a few years since I've used a Kirby, so they may have changed the design of their models since I last had one.
I also have used Hoovers and Eureka vacuums (6 or more years ago). The Eureka model I had was a housewarming gift, and had a real issue with clogging. I can't remember the exact type of model, but it was an upright with a bag.
I love my Dyson. Have had it for 3 years and still works great!!!I don't have pets, but have 3 messy kids :-)
Well... I don't have 6 kids running around, but I do have one toddler, 2 shedding dogs, and a slightly messy husband! I had used a Kirby upright for about 5 years and loved it (except it is heavy and awkward for stairs). But, my mom bought me a Miele after my daughter was born, and it is great! It is a canister vac. It is lightweight and really has great suction! The bags are a little small for my taste, since we are constantly picking up tons of dog hair they fill up fast, but other than that, it is great for all my vacuuming needs!!! And, we are about to buy the "child version" available to Toys 'R Us... it is identical to the adult version of the vacuum, and then my daughter can feel like she is helping (maybe something good for you with all the little ones around during the day!). Good luck!
