Red and Welted "Wee Wee"

My niece is 2 1/2 and still in a diaper. She has a red welted rash on her privates. It sort of looks dry and scaley. She is very red on the inside and she doesn't really talk yet so I can't ask her if it hurts. I would appreciate any comments as to what it may be and what I could put on it. She has had it on and off for some time now.

What can I do next?

That's most likely a yeast infection. The best treatment is a topical application of miconazole, the same cream you buy that comes with the applicators (the 3-day is more than sufficient). Apply with a tissue after cleaning her 2-3 times per day until symptoms disappear, and follow with an extra 2-3 days. My girls have always been real sensitive to them, so I had to stop giving them baths (they both take only showers) and I always keep a tube of cream on hand. Hope this helps :}

It could be a yeast infection and if that is the case then the regular ointments won't work. I have two twin nieces that are almost 3 and still in diapers. They use to get these a lot as babies and still occasionally do now. You have to get an over the counter yeast cream. They have off brands but if normal ointment for diaper rash isn't working 3-4 days then I would try or contact a doctor about the possibility of a yeast infection.

if there are tiny white "heads" on the bumps she could have a yeast reash. My daughter had one we use monostate and it cleared up in a few days. The was she wasn't getting her wet diapers changed often enough at her sitter. Once it cleared up she has never had it again. We contacted the DR. first.

Sometimes little girls can get yeast infections on their "privates". This happened to a friend's little girl. Regular diaper rash ointment WILL NOT clear this up. have her parents take her to the doctor for a prescription medicine.

i don't know what it could be, but i would suggest she go to see the Dr. maybe try putting her in cloth diapers or underwear, or letting her be naked for a good part of the day, and just dealing with the messes. i used to put an old shower curtain down, then a sheet on it, then some toys to keep them on it for a while. maybe while she watches a video or naps or something relatively still.

My daughter is 3 and has had this problem on and off all her life. Our pediatrician suggested putting vinegar in her bath water. It works wonders. We get the organic apple cider vinegar that says "aged in wood" on the label. You can find it at a health food store. Plain white vinegar works, too, just not a quickly. Pour a few cap fulls in her bath water (between her legs if you can) every night for several nights. Also, clean her with a warm, wet washcloth when she is changed. This keeps the soap from the wet wipes off of her skin. She may be getting too much acid in her diet. Try dilluting her juice more and see if the rash comes back. If it gets worse, call her pediatrician. She may have a yeast infection. I hope this helps her clear up quickly.

I have seen this on both my boys. It was a persistent rash that would not go away no matter how many times I changed their diapers or put Desitin on them, so I called the doc, and was told it was probably a yeast rash and to mix half and half full strength Desitin with Lotromin Athletes foot cream and apply that 3x a day, just using the straight Desitin in between applications. I did this and their rash was significantly improved within a day, and completely gone by the second day. Also, I let them go naked for a little while, like after bath time, or when I know we won't have any surprise visitors who might get peed on....lol

best case scenario, allergy or highly acidic urine. but it does sound a little like infantigo. if it is, then be aware - it i VERY contagious. Have you taken her to see a pediatrician?? you're probably going to get some wild "try-at-home remedies" but your best bet is a doctor. regardless, it is an infection...that could get really serious really fast especially in a kid so young.

Desitin. The Original, not the creamy, and put it on thick! An Aveeno bath will help too. Poor baby!

I feel sure it's the diaper and tee-tee causing this problem and irritation. Try really hard to get her potty trained. She is definitely old enough. In the meantime, wipe Desitin (the original white cream) on her little girl area also and it will help to protect her from any wetness and is great for curing the irritation. Do this daily (maybe 2X) until she's well.

It could me a bacterial or fungal infection. If it hasn't gone away with using something like Boudreaux's Butt Cream (great stuff), you should have it looked at by her doctor.

I would definately recommend a doctor visit while it is effected. It could be yeast or anything, but i wouldn't let it go unattended myself. Of course, if she's your neice that may not be an option for you.
Have a lovely day and god bless!!

The first thing I recommend is potty training. You need to be diligent in constantly changing her diaper every time it is soiled.

In the meantime, try A&D ointment. It is a lighter rash ointment; it has the consistency of petroleum jelly. This will also help protect her private area from the soiled diaper.

I would also recommend taking her to the pediatrician. I have a 6 year old that at around 15 months of age, our pediatrician recommended we limit her orange juice intake and any other juices with a high acid content. We used the medication prescribed for the irritation she had in her private area and limited her OJ intake. Till this day, we have not had a reoccurrence.

I hope this helps.

I agree... try boudreaux (sp?!?) butt paste from WalMart. Just apply it to the outter part of her private area (not inside). I would put some on everytime you change her. Be sure to wash it real good that night and put it on once more. If it's not cleared up by the next morning, I would call her peditrician. I really think that would work though... my daughter has had simular to that as well, and it worked great!!

Check with her doctor. She could have a yeast infection and vulvitis. These are common in young children in diapers. There is a creme the doc will give you that clears it right up.

Hopefully, she will start potty training soon. By Spring is the best time, earlier is even better. The BEST remedy is Boudreaux's Butt paste. They sell it at Walmart and most drug stores in LA. If you live somewhere else, google it and you can buy it online. That is my remedy for anything in the diaper area. It even works for adults when they have hemmorhoids(sp?). It is a great a great inexpensive way to heal diaper rash, redness and irritation. We didn't have to ask the doctor to prescribe anything once we started using the Boudreaux's butt paste. If it doesn't help then your niece may have to see her pediatrition. Good luck!

J.: First of all just let me say at 2 1/2, your niece should be potty trained! Is her mom work with her on that? As for her rash, it sounds like she may have a severe case of diaper rash, along with a severe case of a yeast infection (especially since it's red on the inside). My suggestion is that her mom should take her to the doctor ASAP. My daughter is now 18, but when she was a baby, she suffered with yeast infections and her pediatrician gave me some prescription ointment to apply inside and on the outside of her private area. But, all of her problems stopped once she was out of her diaper, at about 1 1/2!

Good luck! Hope this helps!

It sounds to me like diaper rash or yeast infection. My baby recently had the same thing and it cleared up when I used diaper rash cream. But it might also be a yeast infection. If it doesn't go away in a day or two using diaper rash cream, she should see the doctor about it being a yeast infection. If it is just diaper rash (mine gets it there a lot as opposed to the rear because she sleeps on her stomach and apparently the wetness accumulates where gravity dictates) I have discovered that a lot of people don't let the area dry thoroughly after cleaning/wiping before putting the cream on. If it doesn't get completely dry (I fan the area for several minutes and let it air dry) before putting on the cream then the cream just seals in the moisture close to the skin which actually makes it worse, as the point of the cream is to seal out moisture and protect the skin from it. I feel silly saying that because I would assume everyone knows that, but every single family member of mine hasn't done that when they've helped out with diaper changes, so maybe people just don't realize. And many kids aren't potty-trained til 3 or a little older, so she should go at her own pace when she's ready, I woudn't be concerned about that.

My daughter gets yeast infections all the time and what you are seeing sounds just like it. Boudreauxs will not clear it up, so if you try that for a day and it still looks bad the next day it is most probably yeast.
