Red Wine on Carpet!

We took our eyes off my 11 month old for 2 seconds today at a family party, and she pulled herself up to a table and knocked over a full glass of red wine. We wiped up as much as we could and used some carpet cleaner, but some spots remain. We will be able to get a hold of a steam cleaner but my question is, what is the best cleaner to use in it?
The next party...nothing but white wine!

I wouldnt have believed it if I didnt see it with my own 2 eyes but salt is the best thing for red wine stains. I would wet the stain again and cover and I mean cover the stain with salt and it absorbs all the wine....it works.

Hi J.,

My suggestion, Sol-u-mel. This product is manufactured by a company called Melaleuca. I shop directly with Melaleuca, (which manufactures over 300 different household and personal care products that are better than anything I have ever used, safe for the environment and your family and are less expensive on a cost per use basis than grocery and discount store brands).

I would be happy to give you some Sol-u-Mel for this particular stain. Please feel free to contact me.

Wow, read some of the other responses. Household remedy which works if you do it straight away.
*Pour lots of SALT over the stain....this will soak up the wine - let it dry.
*Sweep up the Salt, use white wine - pour it liberally on the remaining stain - we used Bubbles (Champagne), I think soda water works too.
*Sprinkle more SALT and repeat.
Our friend knocked his full glass of red wine on our cream carpet - he was mortified but went right to work doing this. The next day there wasn't even a residue mark left
Good luck!

Wine Away! It's the best stuff ever. It looks like a hairspray bottle and has a maroon/wine red label. You can get it at any liquor store and I've even seen it at Jewel in the liquor section. I know it works really well if you get to the stain right away but not sure how well it works after it's set for a while. At least you'll have it for future reference if it doesn't work this time. My friend spilled an entire glass of red wine on his shirt and we used wine away. The entire stain came out.

Full strength peroxide mixed with a tsp of dawn or carpet cleaner. Soak the stain let sit and then blot. There is also a product called Wine away. The peroxide mixture has worked for me to remove red wine and Hawaiian punch. I also wanted to add to make sure you then blot the area with fresh plain water after you have removed the stain.

I would try one of those "Oxy" cleaners that you can get anywhere - Target, etc. I can't remember which brand I use, but they really do work on pretty much anything organic.

We have a Bissel steam cleaner, i forget which model but that doesn't matter -- there is a squeeze bottle liquid cleaner made by Bissel called OxyGenII, it's about $10, but it is seriously the best thing I've found for stains -- squeeze on stain and you can seriously watch it disappear, even red wine. Then steam clean as usual. :)

Hi J.... you sounded like me about 7 months ago. Check the archives of mamasource but I had posted about this and got like 20 responses.

It sounds like you tried some treatments already so it might be a little more tough. But I would try Shot Spot (aresol, sell it at target) or wine out (wine.com - I now have a bottle on reserve. people swear by it). Some other tips I have heard & tried (while stain fresh) - pour white wine over the stain, yes white wine! I didn't do this but I did put salt over stain, let it soak up for an hour or so. Then I used Shot Spot (I think that's the name, it's in an orange\blue aresol can). Then I used Woolite Oxy. The whole process took me about 6 hours to get the stain out (I had broken an entire bottle of red wine). But it came out. If you look REALLY closely along the floor moldings there is some discoloration but I was so happy. I wish the same for you :)
