Reflux and Feeding

My three month old son has been diagnosed with acid reflux since he was 6 weeks old. He was on ranitidine for 5 weeks, with the dosage increased from 0.6 ml to 1.5 ml. While it worked for initially, the symptoms always return. Right now, he's been put on prilosec. My son does not have the classic symptoms of spitting up, but he cries at every feeding after taking a 0.5-1 oz from the breast or bottle (i'm breastfeeding and express milk for the bottle). He would arch his back and go stiff as a plank. To calm him to eat again, I would to rock him on a yoga ball or my husband will have to jingle him non-stop on his lap. Does anyone have any idea what I can do about these feeding sessions? He's on prilosec for the past 3 days. While it worked a bit, he's still having problem. Many thanks for your help

My daughter was diagnosed at about 5 weeks and she was put on Zantac and that worked for a while and then she was later switched to Prevacid. I would try to get him to a GI. They can test for the reflux and figure out a proper medicine and dosage. The best of luck!

Did you have a IBCLC or LC check to see if you had a fast let down? Do you nurse on one breast per nursing session? May be gassy from too much foremilk. Keep up the good work with breastfeeding!! When you breastfeed him, try to keep an upright position - a boppy pillow or nursing pillow will help you tons!

I don't have really any suggestions other than to see a pediatric GI doc. Unless you are already. My son is also on zantac for silent reflux - never a puker, just the extreme irritability, coming off the breast, frequent feedings to sooth himself, arching, coughing. Zantac has worked for us though - he was also diagnosed around 6wks old or so (he's 4mo now) and we've had to increase his dose twice so far - both times he'd gained about 2 lb before being symptomatic again. Anyway, I would suggest taking him to GI. You may have to put him on thicker formula or thicken the breastmil if your doctor will let you. Good luck!

My daughter also had similar symptoms at the same age. Her reflux started at about 2 weeks old. She ended up needing to take omeprazole (prilosec) at a very high dose given by the pediatric GI specialist and is only now coming off the medicine at 16 months old. It seemed that she had a sensitivity to cow's milk and soy milk and had to be put on a special prescription amino-acid based formula in addition to the medication. She also had a touch of colic, which did not help. I could not breastfeed, so I'm not sure if eliminating those items from your diet might help...might want to check with the pedi on that. We were lucky in that our daughter did not have blood in her stool (even microscopic). If she had, it would have been indicative of further GI problems. I would highly recommend seeing a pediatric GI specialist to ensure this isn't the issue. We saw Dr. Higuchi from Children's Hospital in Boston and were very pleased. It can take awhile to get an appointment, so it might help if your pedi makes the appointment or ask to be put on a cancellation list.

I am sorry for not really having a quick solution....I can say my 3 kids out grew it in time...and my youngest Grandchild is getting better at 20 months.
........It is heart wrenching, and makes for very tired parents. Please have patience....in time this will work out.
Your baby needs your comfort and love...as much as you can give.

Prilosec should be used for about 6 weeks. After about a week you will get results. So keep him on it. My son has been on it for most part of his 1st year. I'm pretty sure Prilosec will eventually work so don't stop it.

I would get a second opinion. I would not give my 3 month old Prilosec if it was not absolutely necessary. Google a naturopathic doctor in your area and get their opinion. Your child's health is worth it.
Good Luck! S.
