Relief from Razor Burn...

Hello! About a month ago, I shaved quickly and ended up with razor burn. I had never had it before, but put lotion on it and didn't think much of it. Now, however, I get it every time I shave. It is quite uncomfortable, not to mention the lovely red bumps. I would appreciate any information on how to get rid of it once and for all!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the great advice! I used Aveeno for immediate relief and now have several options to try so it won't happen again!

Try a noxezema like cream to the skin to lubricate the skin while shaving. I use is and have never had a razor bump.

Try boudreaux's buttpaste. We use it for everything. Mosquito bites, etc. gets rid of the red and itchyness.

Use hair conditioner on your legs when you shave! I use Aveda Rosemary Mint on my hair and my legs:) no bumps and no need for extra lotion unless you wish! Also, make sure you use your razor head no more than 5 times. Expensive, I know but it protects your legs from tiny cuts and the bacteria growing on your razor between uses.
Hope this helps!

Hi K.,
I know you already had a lot of advice, and found a solution to your immediate problem, but I had to put my two cents in. I have very sensitive skin, and got razor burn so much that I had quit shaving my legs except if I was going swimming in the summer, which was hardly ever, and on occasional special occasions, birthdays, weddings, funerals, anniversaries and things of that sort. When my daughter was about 3 months old we went out to eat with my husband and two customers of his. The two ladies are best friends and we were talking and one Maryanne was holding my daughter and commented on how she smelled like Baby Magic and how much she loved that, I said I loved the way it smelled also, then she said you know I hate to admit this but I use it to shave my legs, and you should try it. It is so awesome for shaving I never get razor burn anymore. I shave my legs on a pretty regular basis now a minimum of once a week which is good for me. I have found for me one place I always get razor burn no matter what I do is my Bikini area and for that I use Diaper rash ointment. I like the Equate white diaper rash ointment that is supposed to be like Desatin from Wal-Mart. I used both kinds for my daughter the Wal-Mart brands were the only ones that didn't make things worse for her, and the white one work well for razor burn as well as heat rash, good thing to always have around the house. I am sure other brands would probably work just as well but we have very sensative skin so when we find something that works we stick with it. Baby magic Lotion works well, as do the generics for a general moisturizer, since they are made for babies the are extra gentle. Good luck.

Deodorant!!!! I guess you wouldn't put it all over your legs, but it works great for after you shave your underarms and bikini area. I got the tip from a stripper friend of mine, and let's face it, who has to shave more often and be razor burn free more than them? = D Sometimes I'll put powder on first. Works for me every time!

Hi K.,

My hubby suffers from severe razor burn. The only product he has found (by accident) is Neutrogena shave lotion. I sometimes can find it in Wal-Mart, but always at Target.

Another idea is a product called Coochy from Slumber Parties. I haven't tried it personally, but have heard rave reviews from others who have purchased it. You may also be able to get it from Passion Parties or other businesses of that sort.

I had the same thing happen a couple weeks ago. I used some aveeno anti-itch cream and it helped the bumps to go away. I know I had shaved in a hurry, so I don't do that any more, but I also thew away the old razor and put a new one on and that seemed to take care of the problem.

After I shave, if I suspect razor burn, I slather on a layer of Burt's Bees Diaper rash cream. Works wonders. I figured that out in a razor burn emergency once.

It's always a good idea to exfoliate the area before shaving it removes the bulid up of dead skin cells and stands the hair up for a closer shave than after use a product for sothing skin i personally love Dermalogica soothing protection spray and then a light moisturiser with no mineral oil or fragrance you can find Dermalogica online to locate the nerest retailer to you. There are also many other products for after shaving to try but i have very sensitive skin and this is what i've found that works best for me.

Hi K.! I know this is late. But, I would also use a good razor. I know I get razor burn with disposable razors. I use the mens Gillette Turbo. It really works well for me and keeps my legs soft. And I never get razor burn anymore. BTW I wanted to say that I loved Susan M.'s answer. I am so going start doing that with a friend. She is right also about submitting to your husband and in return he will give his wife the love that she wants. I know that has nothing to do with your question. But it's a good tid bit to add for whoever! Have a great day!!!

I have used the Coochy Creme tanya S. spoke of. It works great! I have gotten mine at Pure Romance parties, but I would think you could order someplace online. I have also tried cornstarch which was recommended to me and that did not help.

I suffer from horrible, chronic razor burn if I deviate from this regimen. The only thing I can use is hair conditioner and a sharp new blade every time. I can't shave very often either; I just go to Sam's Club and by a huge bottle of Dove conditioner (the moisturizing kind)--it has a pump--and use that. It works great, is cheap, and no bumps!

Since razor burn results from a fine layer of skin cells being removed as your shaving, perhaps using an anti-biotic cream like Neosporin with the added pain reliever would help heal the burn quicker, and maybe even cut down on chances of getting a minor infection.

Also use a fresh disposable razor everytime to cut down on infection, and maybe ensure a smoother shave because the razor is sharp and fresh.

I am a direct sales consultant for BeautiControl, and we have a product called Spa Warming Trend Green Tea Masque. It warms on contact when water is applied to the face, and it works great for bikini shaving, eliminating those annoying little bumps! It's normally $23, but I am running a Summer Makeover Special at 20% off. Send me an email if you are interested!
