Remedy / Solution to Make the Dirty Sock White.

My kids bring home the socks in their worst condition. I've tried several detergents and bleaching solutions but nothing can make it whiter. Tried soaking them overnight too. Can somebody help. Even want to know how to make the white t-shirt white after they have been soiled. Please help with any tactics you might be using to wash it clean.

The best solution I found with my granddaughter is to buy large packages of inexpensive socks (cheap) from Walmart. Kids take their shoes off all the time; it's not worth the worry of getting them really clean. Bleach will wear them out quicker and they may be sensitive to it causing them to remove socks and go barefoot. I buy the packages of 12pairs and larger if found.

GOOD LUCK! Hope you find your solution. I gave up and started buying black and grey socks. I thought, "hmm, life's too short to worry about white socks." I would think soaking them in bleach would work, but then sometimes it disintegrates the fabric.

I use the green bottle of SOILLOVE I think it's called. Recently I bought the blue bottle for whites. They are on the top shelf wherever you buy your detergent next to the shout and oxi. I generally soak in oxi then sprinkle the blue stuff in the wash. I'm sticking with this because somehow, this combo got red jello and spaghetti sauce off my son's white collared shirt. I read on a home remedy thing that ground black pepper gets whites white. Good luck!

My son who's in preschool has the same problem. I've learned to buy brown socks from Target.

First off, don't sweat it!! :) Second, this works pretty darn well for me, but I don't expect total perfection. In spite of what a previous poster said, I always use the hottest water, and most stain experts recommend hot water for whites.....I use Tide detergent with the hot water and let them soak for at least 1-2 hours, and about 1-2 X's a month I start them right before I go to bed and let them soak all night. They look pretty good when they come out of the dryer! My son plays baseball and our fields have red clay dirt, so that is harder to deal with. When I have time (not every week, believe me) I let them soak the hour or two w/the Tide, then put in a cup of bleach and let them soak 20 minutes w/the bleach and Tide. I always give them a 2nd rinse and use fabric softener when I use bleach. Don't like the smell and the thought of residue on my son's skin. They come out pretty white! I've tried the Tide w/bleach and wasn't overly impressed. I've also tried quite a few other detergents through the years, but none seem to clean my family's clothes as well as Tide. However, my mom swears by Costco's detergent---but no dirty munchkins in her home!!

I just heard something today on the radio...to use Hydrogen Peroxide to make whites brighter, etc. I even use it to clean the carpets as well as eliminate blood stains too because it's great at killing bacteria!
Good luck!

I heard (on HGTV) that if you disolve an aspirin in a gallon of water and soak your whites, they will be cleaner and brighter. I just heard it this morning so I havent had a chance to try it out!

always wash your white clothes with cold water and use the tide w/beach clothes soap. If you wash your whites in hot water the hot water will bake the stains in the clothes.

Hope it works for you!

Hi R.,

I subscribe to a newsletter called Debt-Free living (formerly known as Cheapskate Monthly). One of the items that is well known by the readers is a product called SOILOVE. You can find it at the 99 cent store, it's in a 16 oz. green bottle. Works great! I'm not had it not work on anything I've tried. It works well on colored items as well.

As some of the others suggested....HYDROGEN PEROXIDE works great on getting out stains too. We've used it for years on our carpets (check for colorfastness on dark colors first) for years....whether it was a juice stain, or dirt from a shoe, or our geriatric dogs pee.....the HP eats up proteins and sanitizes as well, and does not leave a residue like most 'detergent' type rug cleaners do. So if you have animals especially, or have a liquid spill, pour a huge mound of salt on it first and let it soak up, then vacuum. Then POUR the hydrogen peroxide into the area and let it get down into the padding to eat away any liquid. HP dissipates because of it's base...so it's not like you are leaving anything behind.

Anyway, putting either product - SOILOVE or HYDROGEN PEROXIDE - in a spray bottle and spraying the socks...should turn out well.

Good luck

You should subscribe to Mercola.com for natural suggestions on cleaning products. I just read an article today that indicates Borax is a great detergent booster for stains and Hydrogen Peroxide is safer than chlorine bleach for disinfecting and whitening as well as lemon juice being a whitener. Good luck.
